Yes, dental hygienists clean teeth. But as inclusion on this list proves, the job of a dental hygienist is evolving and becoming more and more sought after.

Along with cleaning, the hygienist often performs sealings, root planing, and in educating the patient in general oral hygiene. In some places, it has become common in dentistry clinics for the hygienist to handle teeth bleaching procedures as well. Hygienists also feel lymph nodes under the patient's chin to detect swelling or tenderness that could indicate presence of oral cancer, as well as visually examine gums for sores and signs of disease. Most dental hygienists need at least an associate's degree, as well as formal training to obtain a license.

By 2020, the BLS predicts more than 68,000 new jobs will be available for dental hygienists -- an increase of almost 38%.
