12 Bad Habits That Hold Good People Back

by Salary.com Staff - Original publish date: June 18, 2012

Most self-help books tell you all the things you need to start doing if you want to be successful. Which is why James Waldroop's "The 12 Bad Habits That Hold Good People Back: Overcoming the Behavior Patterns That Keep You From Getting Ahead" is not your run-of-the-mill self-help book.

Waldroop is this week's Salary Talk guest and he sits down with Aaron & Wendy for a rather unusual conversation. Instead of doling out tips on what people should begin doing if they want to succeed, Waldroop's book is a list of bad habits people need to STOP doing if they want to get ahead. And some of those bad habits might surprise you.

While the Nobel Peace Prize is celebrated, being regarded as a full-time peacekeeper at work isn't something to aspire to. While it's nice to like the people you work with, keeping the peace at all costs could limit discussion, which puts a lid on new ideas. Likewise for people who always swing for the fences. Homeruns are great and make you look good, but if you're trying to hit one out of the park every time you might screw up your swing.

This is a great podcast for people who might not even know they're engaging in bad habits, and are constantly wondering why they're not being hired or promoted.
