What does a Claims Supervisor do?

A Claims Supervisor supervises most activities in the claims department. Oversees the investigation of insurance claims for personal, property, or casualty loss based on coverage, appraisal, and verifiable damage. Being a Claims Supervisor interacts with claimants and oversees the review of claim forms and other records to determine insurance coverage. Supervises negotiations to settle claims out-of-court up to a predetermined limit. Additionally, Claims Supervisor refers claims exceeding authorized limits to next level of supervision. May be responsible for reviewing and processing highly complex or high-value claims. May assists in training subordinate Property and Casualty Claims Examiners and Adjusters. A level II supervisor has authority for personnel actions and oversees most day to day operations of group. May require a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Claims Supervisor supervises a small group of para-professional staff in an organization characterized by highly transactional or repetitive processes. Contributes to the development of processes and procedures. Thorough knowledge of functional area under supervision. To be a Claims Supervisor typically requires 3 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.
