India Regulator introduces mandate for Life Insurers, and changes to Health Insurance Operations.
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India has announced that the practise of issuing benefit illustrations at the point of sale is to become mandatory as part of an attempt to prevent the mis-selling of life insurance policies and increase transparency.
As part of the declaration, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has stated that the issuing benefit illustration must be signed by both the policyholder and insurer, be part of the insurance policy and must contain a warning about the non-guaranteed portion of the returns on the policy, in order to prevent a mismatch of policy content and client expectations.
Life Insurers must also display the projected rate of return of their traditional insurance policy products and unit-linked insurance plan's benefit illustrations, with the illustrations to be based on two different assumed rates of return, both of which are to be aligned with the format prescribed by the IRDAI, according to a report by Asia Insurance Review.
The deadline has been set due to the inactivity of life insurers following the initial request by IRDAI for them to issue benefit illustrations, with the majority of life insurance firms failing to undertake action following the initial request.
