The Importance of Employee Productivity and Compensation

Money is perhaps the biggest motivator for employees. Put some useful perks and benefits in addition to the money to create an impressive total compensation package and you will likely have a happy employee. If they are happy and satisfied with their compensation, how will this affect their productivity?

This question produces some interesting answers. In this article, we will explore how a competitive package can influence an employee’s productivity. Before this, however, we will see which other factors can impact employee productivity.

Are you Paying Fairly and Equally?

What Impacts Employee Productivity?

First, it’s important to note that employee productivity is a multidimensional phenomenon. You can measure it in various ways, and it’s also affected by the specific context and industry for each employee. With this in mind, here are several factors that can influence employee productivity:

  • Workplace Environment

Having a positive and comfortable work environment can lead to higher levels of motivation and job satisfaction among employees. When this occurs there is a higher chance that productivity will also increase. Having a well-organized and efficient workspace can make it easy for employees to communicate and find any tools or resources they may need. On the contrary, a poor work environment can lead to low morale, high levels of stress, and low productivity.

  • Job Design

The way a job is structured, and the responsibilities associated with it can impact productivity. Having a high level of autonomy and variety in a role can help increase engagement and motivation. If a job is monotonous, with low autonomy and a lack of opportunities for growth, it will culminate to reduce employee productivity.

  • Management Style

The way a manager manages their team can either foster a positive and productive work environment or create a negative and unproductive one. Every employee has different needs, so managers need to be able to address them as much as they can. One management style may not fit all, so it is vital for a manager to be able to adapt their style where they can.

  • Workload

Workload is a key influencer of productivity. If an employee has an excessive workload, it can lead to burnout which will reduce their productivity. Finding a comfortable but challenging workload for your employees is key to increasing productivity within your organization.

  • Stress and Health

Personal and professional stress can both affect the productivity of a worker. The mental and physical health of an employee, if not taken care of, can negatively impact their productivity. Organizations should ensure that they have support systems in place to relieve employees’ stress and take care of their health.

  • Technology

Technology that is old or malfunctioning can limit the productivity of employees. Out-of-date computers and machinery can slow down workers and cause tasks to take longer than they should. To avoid this, regularly check the technology your organization uses to see if it is still performing at a high standard.

  • Training and Development

Training employees to have the necessary skills and resources to perform their job will make them more likely to be productive. With training and development comes greater confidence, which leads to increased engagement and motivation. On the flip side, a lack of training and development opportunities can lead to employees feeling stagnant in their roles.

Can a Compensation Package Influence Employee Productivity?

To have the best chance of higher  employee productivity, organizations need to offer a competitive package. If an employee feels that the compensation they receive is too low, it can negatively impact productivity and performance. It will also lead to demotivation and a feeling of being undervalued by an organization.

If an organization offers a competitive package, it will help them attract and retain employees.  Compensation isn’t just about salary,  as there are many other components that employees value. These include benefits, performance-based incentives, recognition, and rewards.

If the compensation package is aligned with the organization’s goals, employees will want to pursue these goals. This pursuit will ultimately lead to a higher level of engagement and motivation. As a result, productivity levels will also increase.

How to Offer a Fair and Competitive Package

A fair compensation package should be fair to both the employer and the employee. It will take into account factors such as an employee’s qualifications, experience, and performance. It will also depend on the industry, location, and size of the organization.

A competitive package will have a good balance of monetary and non-monetary benefits. It needs to be competitive against industry standards while being in line with what you offer current employees in similar roles. Over time, you may need to review and adjust compensation packages to remain competitive and up to industry standards.

If you offer a competitive package that is fair, it can boost an employee’s productivity. Knowing that they have the perks and benefits in their compensation in place will increase job satisfaction. If there is higher productivity, the overall performance of the organization will improve.

Consistently Review to Remain Competitive

Productivity and compensation are intrinsically linked. To continue having high productivity levels, organizations need to review and update compensation packages where necessary. If done effectively, your employees will be happy, and your organization will thrive.
