About the role

On-site | Full-time | Mid-Level

The Mine Site Lab Technician performs sample analysis directly at the client site in Baffin Island, Nunavut. The site operates on fly-in, fly-out rotations and is a unique opportunity for those open to travel and working in a camp site environment!

About the Site:
Work Schedule
  • Employees work a 21 day in / 21 day out shift rotation on the mine site. Hours of work are between 6:30am-6:30pm, or 6:30pm-6:30am.
  • Within each shift, employees will have 2 x 15-minute breaks and 2 x 30 minute meal breaks.
  • As a condition of employment in this role, a Compressed Work Week Agreement will be required.
  • Baffinland is located in the extreme north, flight departure delays can happen.
Employee Amenities
  • Lodging and meals provided during the 21 day work period. The site offers a full service cafeteria that provides meals at set hours while other snacks/beverages are available 24 hours per day.
  • A full service medical facility, laundry facilities, recreation and fitness center are on site.
  • Bedding will be provided. You are responsible for providing your own toiletries and towels.
  • Wi-Fi is available on site, with restriction on live streaming, downloading, and Skype.
  • Telephones are available on-site for staff use.
  • You are not able to travel off the mine site while on your 21 day work period. All facilities are within a few minutes walking distance from one another.
Screening Requirements
  • A COVID19 pre-screen is done at the airport prior to boarding the plane to site. Employees will be tested for COVID19 upon arrival at the mine-site and are expected to adhere to all mine-site pandemic protocols.
  • A pre-access medical screening will need to be completed. Employment is contingent on Baffinland medic granting access to site.
There is a full security team on site and random drug screening will be conducted. No alcohol or illegal substances are allowed and all bags arriving/departing are searched. Breach of this rule will result in your immediate and permanent removal from the site. There is also zero tolerance for acts of violence.

ALS Staff must follow all of Baffinland on-site policy and procedures and personal protective equipment must be worn in all posted areas.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Standardize equipment as needed;
  • Process samples according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) while meeting Turn Around Times (TAT) and hold times;
  • Data entry of results;
  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting and ensure that instrumentation is in good working order;
  • Keep registers up to date;
  • Minimize wastage and coordinate disposal of waste following SOPs;
  • Provide training and assistance to other technicians and technician assistants as required;
  • General laboratory clean-up and maintenance to prevent contamination and safety hazards;
  • May interact with client regarding samples;
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality;
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Other duties as assigned.
About you:
  • Excellent time management and planning skills, strong attention to detail;
  • Excellent command of the English language both verbally and with written communications;
  • Strong customer service focus, interpersonal and organizational abilities;
  • Demonstrated judgement, creativity, integrity and ability to problem solve;
  • Excellent computer skills including MS Word and Excel,
  • Ability to effectively handle escalations and time critical issues.
Required Qualifications:
  • College Diploma or University Degree with Chemical background preferred;
  • 3 years of laboratory experience;
  • Must have a demonstrated strong aptitude to data processing, data reviewing and overall analytical skills;
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex instrumentation problems;
  • Strong aptitude in mechanical and troubleshooting skills;
  • Advanced experience with Microsoft Excel.
Physical Demands:
  • This position requires mobility to climb, lift, pull, sit and/or stand for up to 12 hours per day;
  • Must be able to work on shift schedule of 21 days in 21 days out;
  • Must be able to travel without assistance;
  • Ability to work in a dusty environment;
  • Manual dexterity to perform repetitive technical tasks;
  • Ability to lift up to 22 kg. (occasionally lifting may exceed 22 kg. and assistance is mandatory from either another employee or the lift assist equipment);
  • Be cleanly-shaven in order to wear protective equipment.
