Field Agronomist
Bayer CropScience is seeking a highly motivated individual to become part of the multi-disciplinary Seed Production Operations. The primary responsibilities are to partner with the Site Operations Guide and Seed Production Team to effectively coordinate and deliver field soybean seed production and related processes to support worldwide evaluation and commercialization of agricultural products. The Field Agronomist also administers and executes projects to ensure compliance, support site safety programs and develop relationships with internal and external partners and key influencers.
This is a permanent position based out of Carman, Manitoba, daily on-site.
What you will do:
- Manage the soybean purity and seed increase program at the site
- Recruit, train, supervise and support the growth and development of other employees including seasonal contractors as needed throughout the season
- Assist in the execution of other observation and seed production/processing activities for soybean and canola
- Implement Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) procedures and programs for safe operation of the research program
- Represent Bayer CropScience and the Seed Production group on field tours, industry seminars, etc.
- Ensure safe and efficient operation of the research program with respect to budgetary guidelines and expectations
- Plays a vital role in field preparation and establishment including seed packaging, shipping, protocol review, trial placement and mapping/field design
- Utilize proprietary software and equipment for planting setup, inventory management, data collection and quality control
- Develop, maintain and implement the use of controlled Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) documents, Quality Management System (QMS) procedures and investigative protocols
- Comply with all CFIA and Bayer CropScience regulatory compliance guidelines for handling and shipping of seed material
- Regular interaction with other Field Agronomists, Seed Processing Operations Specialists, Planning Managers and Scientists, to facilitate efficient trial planning and placement, sharing of ideas and techniques and quick response to scenarios that may arise (e.g. weather or pests affecting trials, logistical issues affecting shipping)
Who you are:
- B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Agriculture or related field with 2/ years agricultural research experience; or Agricultural diploma and 3/ years agricultural research experience
- Experience coordinating/supporting operations for field research or experience in production scheduling
- Operation and maintenance of agricultural field and/or research lab equipment
- Effective team empowerment qualities including excellent organizational and motivational skills, accurate record keeping and attention to detail
- Strong verbal and written English communication skills
- Knowledge of basic statistical analysis and experimental field research design principles
- Computer skills related to data acquisition and analysis, proficiency in MS Office applications, and experience/knowledge of precision agriculture technology
- Appropriate Manitoba driver’s license
- Ability to work long hours when necessary, and manage seasonal overtime of full and part-time staff in accordance with applicable provincial regulations
- Willingness and ability to obtain a pesticide application license
- Broad knowledge preferred of Canadian crop production and farming practices, canola and soybean agronomy, plant breeding and precision agriculture applications
- First Aid certification, Manitoba pesticide application license and/or Transporation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) certficiations are preferred
