We are currently looking for an Operations Manager to lead our Operations team at Brooklyn Power on a full time, permanent basis. Brooklyn Power is a biomass-wood fired power plant, consisting of a 30 MW turbine/generator and a 330,000 lb/hr fluidizer bed boiler.


Located in Brooklyn (Queens County) Nova Scotia, Brooklyn Power is a part of Emera Energy, a well-established and growing energy marketing and trading company in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Emera Energy is a wholly owned subsidiary of Emera Inc. and is a premier energy marketing company. Emera Energy buys and sells energy commodities and provides related energy management services to customers throughout Eastern Canada and the Northeastern United States.

As Operations Manager you will lead the Operations team which consists of approximately 17 employees plus contractors as required, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the power generation plant, monitoring plant operations for efficiency and safety, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. This position reports directly to the Plant Manager and is responsible for implementing preventative maintenance, emergency, and operational plans and procedures while resolving operational issues and managing resources effectively.

Key Elements of This Role Include:

  • Collaborate with maintenance teams to address equipment repairs and upgrades and direct the implementation of maintenance schedules to optimize plant performance and enhance plant availability.
  • Develop and implement budgets for utility operations, forecasting future needs and controlling costs and ensuring set budgets and project/department milestones are adhered to.
  • Ensure team is structured and resourced to deliver on their strategic and operational accountabilities, and that individuals are receiving suitable professional development and succession planning is addressed as required.
  • Plan and coordinate semi-annual full plant outages and conduct inspections and repairs as required.
  • Analyze plant performance data through various reports to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Meet all regulatory requirements set by the Nova Scotia Labour, Skills, and Immigration Technical Safety Division (Technical Safety Act and Boiler and Pressure Equipment Regulations).
  • Participate in the design and implementation of capital projects related to utilities.
  • Drive safety and environmental initiatives within the team and ensure compliance with safety and environmental protocols as well as driving a positive safety focused culture.
  • Contribute to problem-solving sessions and continuous improvement efforts and effectively manage the execution of plant improvement plans and projects.
  • Work with the leadership team to drive performance within Brooklyn Power and undertake any other relevant duties as assigned.


These skills will make you successful:

You recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and where possible possess the skills and experience listed below:

  • First Class Power Engineer License.
  • Five (5) years of experience in a First-Class Power Plant
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Strong leadership skills and a passion for safety and innovation.
  • Experience in utilities management, maintenance, and capital projects.
  • Knowledge of basic accounting and finance principles.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills along with strong organizational abilities.
  • Analytical and critical thinking abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word)
  • Strong understanding of power plant functions and department processes.


The ideal candidate will live within 60 km of Brooklyn Power (or is willing to relocate) and will be available for work outside standard working hours. This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test.
