At VIA HFR, we are re-imagining passenger rail service on behalf of the Government of Canada! Our goal is to create a new sustainable train network that that will run faster, more often and will be more reliable between Toronto and Québec City. The HFR project is Canada's largest infrastructure project in generations.

Are you ready to take on a stimulating and impactful challenge? Look no further: VIA HFR is looking for a Director, Traction Power. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director to oversee the Traction power engineering activities under the rail, engineering, and integration division of the Project Management Office.

The role

The Director, Traction Power plays a crucial role in the planning, design, and construction of rail infrastructures for the HFR project. They are responsible for overseeing all Traction power features related to these facilities. Reporting to the Vice President Rail, Engineering and Integration, the ideal candidate will have a strong background in Traction power engineering, exceptional leadership abilities, and a proven track record of managing and delivering successful projects.

The responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Private Development Partner to develop comprehensive plans for Traction power that align with project timelines and objectives.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for traction power systems, focusing on electric and hybrid technologies, ensuring alignment with the Project's objectives.
  • Provide technical expertise in Traction power engineering, overseeing the design and integration of electric and hybrid systems for optimal railway performance.
  • Lead a team of SME's and engineers for the planning, design, and implementation of Traction power systems, ensuring they meet safety, efficiency, and performance standards.
  • Develop and maintain strong relations with electricity generating companies.
  • Lead the lifecycle management, and performance optimization of Traction power, including trains and other vehicle.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for the Private Development Partner regarding Traction power.
  • Implement rigorous quality control measures to monitor engineering activities, ensuring that all Traction power elements meet required standards.
  • Ensure all engineering activities comply with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Private Development Partner, government agencies, community stakeholders, and external partners to address concerns, resolve issues, and foster positive relationships throughout the project lifecycle.

The requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent certification (Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec is desirable).
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Traction power engineering.
  • Excellent leadership abilities and proven track record of successfully leading large-scale infrastructure projects from conception to completion.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Being fluent in both Canadian official languages is desirable.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a focus on innovation, creativity, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
