Getting Even: Why Women Don't Get Paid Like Men & What to Do About It

More women than ever are entering the workforce. The number of women earning college degrees has now passed that of men. We are seeing an increase in the number of female executives at major corporations.

So why do women still earn just 77 cents to a man's dollar?

It's a good question, and one that Evelyn Murphy has spent most of her life trying to answer and solve. Murphy has a distinguished political career, including the distinction of being elected the first female lieutenant governor in the history of Massachusetts in 1986. She currently serves as the president of The WAGE (Women Are Getting Even) Project near Boston, where she holds workshops to give women the background, knowledge and confidence to earn equal pay in the workforce. Last but not least, she's also the author of "Getting Even: Why Women Aren't Paid Like Men & What to Do About It."

As one of Aaron & Wendy's most distinguished guests to date, Murphy speaks plainly and honestly about the wage gap, why it exists and what can be done to bridge it. She covers everything from maternity leave to disposing of the tired old excuses and cliches people still try to use to minimize, and even dismiss, the wage gap and gender inequality issues. She also dishes out some great (and free) advice about how women can help themselves to earn equal pay.

If you're a woman who thinks you're being paid less than your male coworker to do the same job, you might be right. Murphy said women miss out on anywhere between $700,000 and $2 million in lost wages over the course of their careers, compared to male coworkers with equal education levels and job experience. If you're a man or woman who wants to understand what's happening and work to change it, Murphy's advice is must-listen material.
