What are the responsibilities and job description for the Commercial Program Manager position at 1008 Johnson Controls Inc.?
Job Details Job Details What you will do This role performs research to understand the business goals and workflows to make sure application requirements are clear so they can be handed off to developers to develop in a way that meets the business goals. Business teams have a hard time conveying their exact needs in a way that developers can understand the whole picture. And developers never have a complete understanding of a business they have never worked in to understand the big picture of workflows that drive how we work and interact with customers. How you will do it Work with developers to really understand what we are trying to do and question the assumptions and areas that do not seem fully understood from the business. This would be things like existing technology and how a new tech fits in without major disruptions to current workflows and accounting for the future planning of other apps. Once there is a clear understanding of where we are going, work with developers on the user stories/requirements and make sure they understand “why” the requirements are the way they are. This gives them a better understanding of the future direction, so they develop solutions in a way that fits with current and future goals in mind. This role is used to communicate with application development teams and oversee our specific developments to assure have successfully communicated the needs of the enhancements. And once in the process of development, that the team is in fact producing content with intended functionality and it not drifting off in the wrong direction. This person also serves as the liaison between the development team and the technical team, keeping the technical team informed of developments and timelines. They also help in the communication between teams, and become the central point of contact, reducing confusion around where they get answers, freeing up production team’s time to focus on there primary function and SLAs for service and not development. What we look for This person should be having almost daily calls with developer, or engineering leads to make sure we are staying on the same on track and answering question that might delay the project. This person also will get the know the strengths of the developers on the team, so when changes are made, we know what gaps need to be filled. And feedback can be provided to Engineering on how the team is performing and meeting our needs. This position is different from a product manager role because most of our enhancement request are very technical in nature and beyond the common knowledge of the typical product manager. This is knowledge that is obtained over years of experience working in a highly technical function. Requirements can explain the outputs needed, but often when highly technical, these can quickly change due to the misunderstanding of the overall function and reasoning behind the need. This person keeps engineers that write the code in check to minimize drift from intended functionality and helps to fine tune the overall process to eliminate workarounds that become common and time consuming due to small feature missed. This person also fills gaps in understanding the technical solution and vetting it from the requirements to make sure the requirements themselves are complete and have enough information to achieve a successful development. They also will recognize when additional technical resources are needed to research a problem.
