The Academic Advisor provides academic advising and support for prospective, and current, students within the College of Engineering to help them achieve the student’s academic goals towards graduation. As needed, the Academic Advisor will mentor students to assist in finding best practices for improving academic performance. Additionally, the Advisor, Academic monitors students to track advancement and improve student retention and persistence to graduation. Finally, the Academic Advisor assists in the development and implementation of advising activities and retention programs and materials in furtherance of the University’s goals and objectives when necessary. The Academic Advisor will be an active member of the College Student Affairs team. CORE JOB FUNCTIONS Educates students about their academic requirements within their chosen field; helps students create, maintain, and edit a viable graduation plan; Answers complex student inquiries and resolves problems related to curriculum, course selection and course prerequisites. Receives and reviews transcripts to ensure eligibility and placement in courses in their respective programs. Reviews student files to ensure deadlines are met for completing all graduation requirements. Assists students in the selection of appropriate courses, cognates and concentrations in terms of students' stated preferences. Initiates and maintains individual student files as appropriate, updating and evaluating file as new information is received in a timely way. Monitors student grade reports each semester to assist in the process to determine probation and suspension based on academic regulations and returns students to regular status after sufficient progress is made. Meets with students who are in academic difficulty. Coordinates with other organizational units to process transfer credits and graduation requests and aid in the resolution of academic problems. Performs administrative activities such as scheduling meetings and interviews. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. CORE QUALIFICATIONS Education: Bachelor’s degree in relevant field Experience: Minimum 1 year of relevant experience Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes: Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure. Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail. Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines. Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary. Commitment to the University’s core values. Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
