Job Description
The Electrolyte Scientist will be responsible for developing and validating 24M’s electrolyte formulations for product development and advanced development initiatives. Expected duties include formulation development and specification, additive identification and selection, root cause failure analysis, and cost reduction activities, all to achieve market and/or customer targets. The Electrolyte Scientist will work closely with other engineers and scientists as part of cross-functional projects to complete challenging development projects, consistent with customer and manufacturing requirements.
Qualifications
- Deep knowledge in lithium ion chemistry and battery components, especially in liquid electrolytes and alkaline metal system
- Experience with synthesis, purification, and characterization methods
- Demonstrated capability of designing experiments to drive decisions in an industrial R&D environment
- Experience with electrochemical cell characterization; three-electrode cells and familiarity with Maccor/Arbin or other equivalent testing systems
- Experience with analytical methods used in lithium-ion batteries, such as, SEM-EDX, TG-DSC, GC-MS, ICP, XRD, etc.
- Understanding of theory supporting electrochemical performance and battery life/degradation models
Key Responsibilities
- Resident expert on electrolytes
- Evaluate battery electrolytes to meet product requirements and R&D objectives
- Define and validate standard test procedures, equipment, and protocols for electrolyte R&D purposes
- Apply diagnostics to investigate cell reactions and conduct failure analysis to identify root causes and generate novel solutions
- Support the product and process development teams in material evaluation, cell building, cell testing, and data analysis
- Champion for environmental health & safety
Areas of Independent Action
- Propose and integrate an electrolyte development plan aligned with company goals, and track execution progress
- Conduct literature research to stay current in developments for electrochemical materials and cells and apply relevant research to 24M’s research and development activities
- Work with suppliers to exchange technical information and enable access to advanced electrolyte research
- Summarize, report on, and present research activities regularly
- Contribute to a positive, team-oriented, and high-quality work environment
Supervisory Responsibility
- Mentor junior scientists and engineers and transfer knowledge about electrolytes and electrolyte development
- Interact with other R&D and engineering groups to promote rational decision-making in research and development
Physical and Environmental Standards
- Capable of working in low moisture dry room environment: < 1.0% Relative Humidity (-50°C dew point)
- Capable of wearing clean room attire when working in dry room environment: face mask, hair net, safety glasses, gloves, coverall suit and shoe covers
- Must be capable of working long hours as needed
- Travel will be required in support of customer discussions, supplier discussions, and relevant conference attendance
