Title: Physiology Research Assistant The purpose of this position is to provide scientific and technical support to the Cardiovascular and Vision Laboratory (CVL) of the Biomedical Research and Environmental Sciences Division at NASA Johnson Space Center. The primary function of the incumbent will be to assist with the collection, analysis, management, and reporting of research and medical data in support of research activities conducted in the CVL. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel. 2. Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies and procedures. 3. Responsible for completing all assigned training. 4. Assist with human subject research data collection, analysis, reduction, and interpretation. 5. Assist in evaluation of laboratory equipment for safety and performance, including contacting vendors for product and purchasing information. 6. Ability to follow detailed research study protocols and data management procedures. 7. Maintain organized and secure approach to retrieval and analysis of archived data. 8. Analyze and organize technical data and reports for management review. 9. Verify equipment performance and conduct necessary trouble shooting prior to data collection. 10. Willingness and ability to meet the requirements of the NASA Postflight COVID Countermeasure policy when supporting postflight crew activities. 11. Willingness to undertake domestic and foreign travel, as required, to support space flight, bed rest, and ground-based experiments. 12. Must be comfortable in simultaneously coordinating multiple projects and managing individual responsibilities. 13. Approach tasks with flexibility and willingness to re-direct efforts in the event of changing laboratory priorities. 14. Ability to work individually and as a team, and clearly communicate timely updates to management on the status of tasks and projects. 15. Perform other duties as required. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE Required: Bachelor's Degree in a related field with 5 years of experience; Master's Degree in a related field with 0-2 years of experience in human or integrative physiology, exercise physiology, or a closely allied field or equivalent experience. The incumbent's abilities and areas of technical skills will include the following: Knowledge and experience in integrative physiology research, preferably cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and/or ocular physiology; understanding of research design and methodology; prior experience collecting data from human test subjects; ability to statistical and graphing software to provide summary and graphical representation of test results. Incumbent must be willing to work on projects collaboratively as a team member of the laboratory; have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; and be capable of clear written and oral communication. Furthermore, this position requires the incumbent to work onsite at NASA Johnson Space Center. Desired: Prior experience with database management is highly desired. Technical skills associated with image analysis, including ultrasound (cardiac and vascular), MRI (eye and brain), and/or ocular coherence tomography (eye), is a plus. SKILLS/TRAINING Required: The incumbent must have knowledge of cardiovascular and/or integrative physiology research methodology. The job requires the ability to work with human test subjects and support research professionals internal and external to JSC. Oral and written communication skills must be excellent. The incumbent must be computer literate and must be able to master the use of spreadsheets and other software packages used for data collection, reduction and analysis. In particular, the incumbent should be proficient with Excel and pivot tables. Desired: Experience with Matlab programming and/or database management.
