Graphic Design Internship, Spring 2022
 
Areas of Focus: Graphic Design and Production of Marketing Assets
Part Time Option: 20 hours per week requested January– April & 40 hours requested leading up to and including event days in May
Full Time Option: 40 hours per week requested January– May, including event days
 
January 11 to June 3, 2022

The Organization: The 500 Festival is a nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating the spirit and legacy of the Indianapolis 500. To achieve our mission, we create fun and life-changing community events that create hype around the city of Indianapolis and state of Indiana in preparation for race weekend. After all, it’s the largest single-day sporting event in the world! Over half a million people are impacted by our events each May, and we love what we do. 
 
The People: The 500 Festival staff is 16 deep and packed with talented, hard-working professionals who care about our city, our state, and what the Indy 500 means to its history and culture. An additional 11 interns join us for the spring semester, and another 3,500 volunteers help us make May a month-long celebration covered in Hoosier hospitality. 
 
The Atmosphere: The office culture is a blend of professionalism and fun with varying personalities and skillsets. We take our jobs seriously, but at the end of the day, we’re the Festival! Whether you’re planning the nation’s best half marathon, executing a flawless red carpet event, or producing one of the world’s largest parades, it’s hard work, but always fun and rewarding! 
 
The Candidates: We want the hardest working and most passionate students. The Graphic Design Intern supports the 500 Festival’s Creative Director in day-to-day duties of design and production of marketing assets for the 500 Festival’s programs events. Potential projects include, but aren’t limited to, designing visual, content for social media, designing print and digital advertisements, production of event-day signage. The Graphic Design Intern is a critical member of the 500 Festival’s marketing and communications team, which functions as the internal marketing and PR agency for the organization.  
 
The ideal candidate for this position:
  • Possesses strong graphic design skills, composition and layout skills and experience in art production
  • Must have strong knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects and InDesign. Working knowledge of Adobe Premiere is a plus
  • Has strong organizational skills, verbal communication skills, creativity, initiative and the ability to manage multiple tasks at once
  • Has strong attention to detail and enjoys working in a collaborative team environment
  • Has knowledge of effective branding practices
 
The candidate must also be flexible and willing to gain hands on experience for all of the 500 Festival events. This would include the ability to go above and beyond while gaining insight into some of Indiana’s largest events. All interns will learn about and participate in event set up, tear down and production for all 500 Festival events and programs.

Learning Objectives: 
  • Assist with the design of marketing assets including: event signage, posters, programs, digital invitations, social media visual content, banner ads, and other print collateral
    • Objective: Initiative, marketing/branding, content creation, relationship management, build skillset within Creative Suite
  • Assist with 500 Festival social media execution including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram. This includes branding of social media platforms, brainstorming and planning concepts for contests and/or campaigns, designing necessary graphics to support a campaign, knowledge of image sizes for each social platform, etc
    • Objective: Design for social media platforms, planning and strategy, researching emerging trends
  • Assist with the creation of visual assets and/or content for the 500 Festival website and IndyMini.com
    • Objective: Designing for the web and mobile, branding 
  • Assist in the creation and routing of print and digital marketing collateral to support 500 Festival events and programs
    • Objective: Initiative, marketing/branding, client management, and business communication 
  • Plan, storyboard and design infographics that communicate the 500 Festival’s mission and vision
    • Objective: Visual communication, project management, designing for the web
  • Oversee front desk approximately 2-3 times monthly.
    • Objective: General organizational knowledge, teamwork, phone / in person communication skills  
  • Attend and provide support for all 500 Festival events
    • Objective: Event planning, problem-solving, photography and interpersonal skills
 
Compensation & Educational Requirements:  
  • The intern must obtain educational credit from an accredited college or university
  • The intern will earn a weekly stipend of $200 for full-time and adjusted accordingly for part-time that will be paid at the end of each month
  • No relocation or housing assistance is provided

  • The internship duration is expected to occur between January and June 2022, however specific start and end dates will be mutually agreed upon by and with consideration of the selected candidate’s degree requirements and the 500 Festival’s Spring 2022 event schedule.
  • Due to the ongoing pandemic, all interviews with potential candidates will take place via Microsoft Teams
