Job Description The Washington Post is looking for an assistant audio producer who loves news, has a sharp instinct for tape that makes a big impact and is calm and focused on deadline. This role will help add sparkle and polish to a new daily morning audio briefing built around The Post’s popular newsletter, The 7. The assistant producer will work alongside a team of journalists dedicated to serving up the day’s most important and interesting stories and help transform it into an engaging audio experience. The ideal candidate will also be poised to pitch in on other podcasts or audio initiatives. This hire is part of The Washington Post’s efforts to better serve the next generation of Post readers and subscribers. Responsibilities: Sign onto an early-morning shift and quickly assess the stories being highlighted that day in order to discuss tape possibilities with the senior producer and the briefing’s writers and editor; Efficiently locate, cut and organize tape for the day’s briefing; Help assemble a clip group or other elements in Pro Tools to pass off to the senior producer or engineer; Assist in coaching the host during tracking sessions when necessary and offer feedback that brings forward a read that is consistent with the briefing’s style; Prepare show copy; Participate in a quality-control listening session with the team; Publish the show to all platforms. The ideal candidate will also be poised to pitch in on other podcasts or audio initiatives. Skills and experience required: At least a year of experience making great audio journalism; Strong news judgement; Familiarity with Pro Tools or similar software; Interest or experience in scoring and sound design; A strong ability to maintain open communication and collaborate effectively under a tight production schedule.
