Job Description The Washington Post is seeking a senior producer to help lead our original video team. This management position plays a critical role in guiding our Murrow Award-winning team of video reporters in coverage of breaking news, enterprise and major live events. The responsibilities of this position include working with video reporters from story pitch to final production, including conceptualization, interviewing, videography and editing of short, mid-form and fully interactive pieces. The successful candidate has exceptional news judgment, with an equal passion for covering breaking and trending news events, as well as enterprise and investigative storytelling. This role requires responding quickly to news anywhere in the world through the deployment of staff video journalists or freelancers and moving seamlessly between breaking stories and long-term projects. The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer and editor, with at least five to seven years of experience helping video journalists write accurate and balanced scripts that grab and hold viewers’ attention through character development. The successful candidate has demonstrated experience managing complex stories that require layers of editorial and legal review. Experience managing interactive projects that balance text, photos, graphics and video is essential. This role also requires managing video journalists’ contributions to our live tent-pole programming, which ranges from on-camera reporting to producing or camera work. The successful candidate will also assist if needed in the production of live programming. Candidates should have a firm knowledge of the operation and capabilities of video newsgathering equipment, including Sony and Canon cameras and the Adobe Premiere suite of editing products. A cinematographer’s eye for visual composition is essential. The role also requires a person who is a team player, able to develop relationships and work across the newsroom to build presentation forms that fit the story from linear video to interactive multimedia experiences. This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations, it will not be eligible for remote work. The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed. Candidates should upload a résumé, cover letter and three examples of outstanding, integrated multimedia work to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to Executive Producer David Bruns, Director of Video Micah Gelman, and Managing Editors Kat Downs and Krissah Thompson. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by June 3 will be prioritized.
