What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shopkeeper position at A Modern Plantsman?

Position: SHOP KEEPER

For this position, we are seeking an individual that has an existing relationship with plants, who is interested in helping us to engage with - and build a community and culture around people and their connection to plants. Our Shop Keeper’s will primarily assist the business with the maintenance, upkeep and the care of the shop itself, along with our customer relationships, and the plants in the shop’s collection (for retail, propagation, cultivation, and preservation purposes.)
This is both a sales and service position, which reports to the Owner & Founder, and the Shop Manager.

Duration of employment: This is a permanent position with the opportunity to take on more responsibility as the individual grows within the company.
Weekly Hours: 12 to 21 hours per week, Wednesday's through Sunday's
Pay: Starting at $14 per hour tips
Location: 124 N. Mainstreet Colfax, WA 99111

Prospective date of hire: ASAP

This position will require that the individual:

  • Have an existing relationship with plants, with a focus and understanding of houseplants
  • Have sales experience, or comparable negotiating, or bartering skills
  • Be an effective communicator, both verbally and through digital means
  • Is comfortable using social media, and being a public facing figure to potentially thousands of people at a time
  • Be okay with some computer work (specifically having proficiency in macOS & iOS)
  • Have availability through Summer and beyond, to work a mix of weekdays and weekends
  • Has an aptitude for conscious culture
  • Is dependable and hardworking, demonstrates drive and passion
  • Eager in their willingness to learn, and take directions well
  • Be self motivated; vigilant in staying ahead of the curve on trends, pitfalls, hiccups, or surges in our day to day business
  • Enjoy people; has patience, and is able to show empathy
  • Be ok working in a team setting, and/or alone for full shifts
  • Is at least 18 years of age or older
  • Has reliable transportation

Duties and Responsibilities - are as follows but not limited to:

  • Helping to maintain a healthy thriving collection by tending to plants in the shops collection by adhering to our daily schedule of tasks
  • gaining a thorough understanding of each plant’s watering, lighting, pest identification/management needs to thrive while in our care, and beyond
  • Maintaining a clean and orderly shop space; practicing cleanliness & tidiness while you work
  • Being customer service oriented by providing an extraordinary experience to as many of to our customers and vendors as possible
  • Passing along pertinent information of plant care needs to customers, co-workers, & management
  • Stay up to date on market trends so as to be in the know of the industry
  • Handle sales (working with POS, inventory, general cash handling, working on potting bench)
  • Keeping tabs on general inventory (in person vs POS) so that items are not oversold, over-or-under priced, and that everything is labeled properly
  • Fostering an innovative mindset so as to always be improving
  • Communicating new ideas to streamline protocols to management/owner/teammates
  • Staying focused in a busy space by multitasking and frequently re-prioritizing to complete tasks
  • Merchandising (plants & pottery) for aesthetically-pleasing displays that attract attention
  • Working the potting bench (by transplanting) for our customers or for internal projects
  • Actively engaging with the community of plant enthusiasts through social media outlets (facebook, instagram, tiktok, google, etc)
  • Aiding in processing of incoming and outgoing shipments of plants, pots, and other goods

Skills and Abilities:

  • Efficiency in time management and task prioritization
  • Participates as an effective member of a team, while continuing professional growth, formulating goals, seeking feedback and applying new skills
  • Ability to be self-motivating while paying close attention to detail
  • Having horticultural knowledge in plants and pest identification, and treatment
  • Merchandising for plants based on knowledge of their growth habits
  • Memorization and awareness of fast moving environment
  • Taking initiative and using critical thinking to make sound decisions that positively affect the business while saving time, money, and effort
  • Basic math, and note-taking
  • Being organized, and decluttered, while practicing awareness of our carbon footprint; minimizing waste, re-using & recycling where possible
  • Some computer work, (MacOS & iOS, Google Suite), with technical savvy
  • Has an eye for brand development in the age of social media: Can translate physical aesthetics into digital formats and vise versa; making things look good across multiple platforms, to bridge gaps in the perception of our brand

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to work mostly on their feet for the duration of their shift, standing for long periods of time
  • Be able to lift a minimum of 45lbs, occasionally to move plants, pottery, or fixtures
  • Must be comfortable and able to climb ladders / be on a ladder regularly
  • Good visual acuity to identify extremely small pests, and the care needs of individual plants
  • Be able to regularly climb stairs, while carrying weighted objects (like trays of plants, or jugs of water, bins of soil or refuse)
  • Use their hands and fingers to handle, control, or feel objects, reach into soil, use power tools, or controls, and make the same movements repeatedly
  • Be ok with getting pricked every now and again by plants that have sharp or pointed edges like cactus

Training Required:

Training is brief, approximately 8-16 hours to start, being led by an experienced team member, with continued training throughout employment. Much of the training is hands on, and will be self guided.
