Overview:

Masterworks is a fintech platform that allows anyone to invest in shares of SEC-qualified blue-chip paintings by names like Banksy, Monet, and Picasso. So far, we have raised over $400M across 100 paintings from more than 450,000 users. This year, we expect to buy more than $1 billion in art, making us the largest buyer in the art market.

The business has more than 180 employees, and has been featured in major media publications such as The NY Times, CNBC, CNN, WSJ, and more. After becoming profitable in early 2020, just three years after being founded, Masterworks raised $110M in its Series A round with a valuation of over $1 billion.

With the exception of our tech team, all employees work in our offices at Brookfield Place in the Financial District of New York City.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a VP of Data Science to lead the development of quantitatively-based investment theses around specific art market sub-segments that will guide which paintings Masterworks’ invests in. This person will examine what factors contribute to price movements in an artists’ market and help identify attractive investment opportunities, as well as buy and sell signals. This person will also help in the design and implementation of our relational art market database. The VP of Data Science will lead the Data Science team and work closely with our Art Acquisitions and Private Sales teams.

Responsibilities Overview:

We are seeking an experienced, high-performing individual who will use quantitative methods to conduct analysis to identify buy / sell signals for artists and artists’ series within the Masterworks’ investment portfolio.

• Identify and execute on predictive models to help internal teams at Masterworks understand what artists markets and / or segments of artists markets are most attractive
• Present analysis to key senior members of the research team and contribute to the generation of ideas on art market drivers
• Help design and implement a relational database to connect various data sources

Requirements and Preferred Experience:

• 5-7 years experience in data science, predictive analysis (ML, NLP, Regression Models etc.)
• Experience with data science languages (R, Python)
• Strong curiosity and interest around what drives returns in the art market
• Experience designing and or implementing schemas for relational databases is a plus
• Experience working with sparse and messy data
• Eagerness to work in a fast paced environment

Measurements of Success in First 90 Days:

• Develop 2 - 3 models to utilize in order to better understand trends in artists markets
• Identify investment metrics that can be applied to artists markets to identify momentum or accelerating markets
• Aid in the proposal for a schema and help implement relational databases for the art market

Additional Requirements:

• Must be able to work in the NYC office 5 days per week
• Must be eligible to work in the US - no exceptions.
