Position Summary:

 

This position acts as a Spanish translator and liaison between the school and parents/students.  This position assists in connecting parents/students to community resources.  The position also assists in the implementation of instructional and non-instructional programs and performs a variety of routine clerical and office tasks in support of teachers and other district staff.

Primary Responsibilities/Duties:

  • Assist parents in using available community resources for social, educational and health needs.
  • Collaborate with staff and parents to develop and implement activities for families with children.
  • Participate in planning meetings with building staff to coordinate services.  Attend staff meetings and training as scheduled.
  • Assist in organizing and facilitating student/family conferences.  Act as a translator during conferences/meetings.
  • Assist teacher in the daily management, organization, monitoring and safety of children; supervise recess and lunch periods, field trips, locker rooms, study and detention rooms and student arrival/departure activities.
  • Supervise and conduct individuals and small groups in educational, creative and structured play activities; assist with classwork and assignments; tutor and monitor student activities in the classroom and special sessions.  Communicate with teacher concerning individual student needs and progress. 
  • Monitor student behavior and progress, and share observations with teacher and other professional staff.  Assist teachers in preparation of student work contracts and program.  Administer discipline as authorized.
  • May be required to provide basic first aid care to ill and injured students.
  • Act as a role model to demonstrate appropriate behavior to students.
  • May operate a computer using educational software to provide student instruction and assistance.
  • Process and distribute forms, correspondence, worksheets, tests and schedules by using office machines such as a computer, photocopier and other standard office equipment.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and records.
  • May enter data into computer and maintain various databases, such as Skyward and attendance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required qualifications:

 

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • AA degree, 72 college credits or pass the ETS ParaPro Assessment.
  • Post high school training in child development and related training desired.
  • Spanish/English speaking/translation.

Certificates/Licenses:

  • Type II driver’s license may be required.
  • CPR/First Aid may be required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of correct grammar, spelling and English usage. 
  • Good communication skills.
  • Training/experience in social work, education or counseling desired.
  • Must be able to translate English to Spanish in oral and written form.
  • Desired effective characteristics include:  flexibility, enthusiasm, and willingness to develop relationships and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Experience working with families with low socio-economic status.
  • General knowledge of office practices, procedures and equipment, and ability to operate standard office equipment such as computer and photocopier.
  • Physical ability to perform required duties which may include lifting and positioning students in and out of a vehicle, wheelchair, therapy equipment, etc.
  • Ability to handle students with behavioral and physical handicapping conditions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and the general public
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and be flexible to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions, policies and procedures.  Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.  Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, fractions and decimals.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required for the purpose of maintaining program standards and supporting student achievement.

SALARY:       2021-22 PSE Salary Schedule. 

 

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk, climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance.  The employee must be able to push items of 50 pounds such as pushing children on a bike, in a wheelchair, or moving/rearranging furniture.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud at a standard acceptable level for this environment.  The employee is responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.  The employee is exposed to infectious diseases/illnesses carried by students.
