What are the responsibilities and job description for the Caretaker position at ABM Industries?

Grounds Maintenance: Oversee the day-to-day maintenance and care of the grounds, including landscaping, lawns, gardens, athletic fields, and outdoor common areas. Develop and implement maintenance plans, schedules, and procedures to ensure the grounds are well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing.

Staff Supervision: Provide leadership, guidance, and supervision to the grounds staff. Assign tasks, monitor performance, and provide training and coaching as necessary. Foster a positive work environment and encourage teamwork and accountability.

Landscape Planning and Design: Collaborate with the Facilities Director, landscape architects, and other stakeholders to develop and implement landscape plans and designs. Ensure the grounds are designed and maintained in accordance with aesthetic standards, sustainability goals, and safety requirements.

Equipment and Supplies Management: Coordinate with the Facilities Director to ensure the availability and proper maintenance of groundskeeping equipment, tools, and supplies. Monitor inventory levels, identify needs, and make recommendations for equipment upgrades or replacements.

Safety and Compliance: Ensure compliance with safety regulations and best practices in grounds maintenance. Identify potential safety hazards, develop and implement safety protocols, and provide training to staff on safe work practices and the proper use of equipment and chemicals.

Budget Management: Assist in the development and management of the grounds maintenance budget. Monitor expenses, track costs, and provide input on budget planning and resource allocation. Identify cost-saving opportunities and explore environmentally sustainable practices.

Grounds Improvement Projects: Plan, coordinate, and oversee grounds improvement projects, such as the installation of new landscaping features, irrigation systems, or outdoor recreational areas. Collaborate with contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.

Customer Service and Communication: Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, and other stakeholders to understand their grounds-related needs and priorities. Provide exceptional customer service, address concerns or requests, and communicate effectively to keep stakeholders informed about grounds maintenance activities.

Environmental Stewardship: Promote environmentally sustainable practices in grounds maintenance, such as water conservation, use of organic fertilizers, and proper waste management. Identify opportunities to enhance the ecological value and biodiversity of the grounds.

Record-Keeping and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of grounds maintenance activities, including work schedules, maintenance logs, inventory records, and project documentation. Prepare regular reports on operational performance, achievements, and areas for improvement.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent. Additional education or certifications in horticulture, landscaping, or a related field is a plus.

Proven experience in grounds maintenance and supervision, preferably in an educational or similar setting.

Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and supervise staff effectively.

Knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques, landscaping principles, and horticultural practices.

Understanding of safety protocols and regulations related to grounds maintenance.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders.

Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.

Ability to operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment and tools.

Proficiency in using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and other relevant software applications.
