What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker I position at ACCS?

Under the supervision of the Director, Maintenance, the employee performs general maintenance to campus buildings, equipment, and grounds requiring skills in more than one trade (i.e. electrical, painting, plumbing, HVAC, and horticulture trades).  Employee conducts daily inspections of facility and maintains records of work; performs various building and grounds general maintenance and custodial work.  The employee completes maintenance work order requests through the use of an automated commercial work order system for the Sparks Campus.  The employee also assists in preparing facilities for special events; and performs administrative duties.
 

POSTING DATE: July 24, 2023

SALARY: Appropriate placement on Salary Schedule E3, 04 (range: $38,215 - $53,976).  

ANTICIPATED START DATE: SEPTEMBER 1, 2023

This position will be based initially at Wallace in Dothan, Alabama.


More than one position in the same job classification may be filled from the applicants for this position should another vacancy occur during the search process.    


ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:  General Maintenance.  Performs various general maintenance and custodial work in the maintenance, upkeep, repair, installation, and/or renovation of buildings following pertinent building codes and regulations in order to ensure facilities are safe, operating efficiently, and aesthetically pleasing.
 
  1. Receives daily work assignments from the Director, Maintenance through an automated work order system.
  2. Performs a wide range of multi-trade, skilled, preventative maintenance and repair tasks to buildings, facilities, and equipment.
  3. Assists higher-graded technicians in repair and maintenance tasks, such as painting, carpentry, roofing, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC work.
  4. Performs skilled tasks independently, such as minor electrical and plumbing repairs, small-area painting, furniture assembly, and door repairs.
  5. Performs preventative maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment and buildings.
  6. Performs routine plumbing maintenance on facilities throughout the campus.
  7. Paints interior and exterior surfaces.
  8. Develops material lists for projects.
  9. Performs housekeeping and custodial duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:  Ground Maintenance.  Maintains campus grounds, and paved areas to maintain a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment.
 
  1. Maintains parking lots, sidewalks, and other paved areas by using brooms, vacuums, leaf blowers, and pressure washers.
  2. Picks up debris including rubbish, pine cones, sticks, branches, etc. from grounds and paved areas surrounding buildings.
  3. Maintains grounds through fertilizing, seeding, tilling, grading, mowing, irrigating, and landscaping.
  4. Operates commercial manual and self-propelled lawn mowers, edgers, and weed trimmers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: General Operations.  Performs general work and other activities to ensure efficient facility maintenance activities.
 
  1. Performs routine maintenance on tools and equipment including oiling, replacing belts, and changing spark plugs.
  2. Moves office and classroom furniture.
  3. Responsible for the moving and setup of furniture and equipment for all events that are College functions held on and off campus.
  4. Performs other duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: College Expectations.  Dependability, attendance, punctuality, and a commitment to do the job right are essential at all times.
 
  1. Reports to work on time, at appropriate workstation or department during all departmental/position scheduled work days and during all departmental/position scheduled work hours.
  2. Understands that failure to report for work and/or reporting late without prior approval are unacceptable practices and will result in disciplinary action.
  3. Performs a productive full day's work.
  4. Ensures that service to students and the general public is a top priority.
  5. Demonstrates a considerate, friendly, respectful, and constructive attitude toward fellow employees and students.
  6. Adheres to all College and System policies and procedures.


  1. High School diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  2. Three years experience in general building maintenance and construction is required. 
  3. One year experience in maintenance/industrial equipment operation is required. 
  4. Possession of a current and valid driver's license is required.
  5. Ability to perform strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, crouching or crawling in confined areas, and ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs regularly and unassisted is required.
  6. Ability to work non-standard and extended hours is required.
ADVISORY COMMITTEE:  The President will appoint an Advisory and Interview Committee to include representatives of the College faculty and staff.  This committee will employ appropriate procedures, including the review of application packets, interview, and demonstration of competency, to determine which applicants are to be recommended to the President for further consideration.  From all the applications received, an advisory committee will select the applicants to be interviewed.

  5. Appropriate transcript identifying the applicant, institution, date degree conferred, and verifying the applicant has received the minimum High School diploma or GED.  (Copy of High School diploma WILL NOT be acceptable).  NOTE: If employed, official transcripts will be required at that time.
