This position will be responsible for supervising ACES West Regional Trading Center (WRTC) term team while playing a key role in ACES’ Western Interconnect portfolio management commercial activities. This position will work closely with ACES resource planning, origination, strategy, capacity, modeling, and trading teams to execute, develop, and improve market opportunities in the Western Interconnect resource adequacy, capacity, and power markets. The Manager of Portfolio Management – WRTC will execute and coordinate day-ahead transactions with WRTC term team personnel to insure a continued commercial trading performance excellence; while developing hedge plans, trading execution strategies, and other innovative solutions to support the portfolio management. The role requires routine power market interaction with resource planning, origination, trading, capacity, strategy, and regulatory departments and building of strategic counterparty relationships that will benefit the ACES portfolio of service clients in the west day ahead, mid-market, and origination term. The job also involves assessing commercial impacts of Western Interconnect market changes, Western Interconnect commercially available hedge products, and Western Interconnect specific term deal opportunities on client portfolios to focus resource planning, strategy, capacity, origination, fuels, and power trading efforts.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • College degree in a related field. Advanced degree highly desirable.
  • Seven plus (7 ) years of Western Interconnect commercial, resource planning, power trading and operations experience.
  • Preferred Western Interconnect experience in one or more of the following areas: resource planning, origination, mid-marketing, transmission, portfolio management, portfolio modeling, and/or front office activities of power marketing.
  • Command of Western Interconnect traded energy risk management products and risk management fundamentals as well as portfolio management and finance concepts including asset valuation, correlation of investment returns, option valuation techniques, and probability theories.
  • Experience and working knowledge of the Western Interconnect US electric transmission grid and associated regional transmission organizations.
  • Excellent knowledge of electric generation assets, related fuels, electric utility industry infrastructure, and business operations.
  • Working knowledge of Western Interconnect Regional Transmission Operators (RTOs), Independent System Operators (ISOs) and established pools and their associated constructs for energy, capacity, ancillaries, transmission and other products.
  • Excellent customer relationship management skills and ability to build business relationships with other companies.
  • Ability to travel throughout the US, potentially extensively, to meet counterparties and clients.
  • Competence in negotiation of wholesale physical delivery and financially settled transactions.
  • Ability to identify Western Interconnect hedge and trade transactions for energy portfolios and provide advice to clients on such actions.
  • Competence with structured-product pricing tools and knowledge of market products.
  • Ability to work effectively in a service team for multiple clients with differing risk policies and tolerances.
  • Strong ability to work with teams and coordinate contributions of others to achieve results.
  • High degree of analytical ability, mathematics, computing, and technical concepts to analyze situation needs and deliver solutions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with employees, management and executive leadership verbally and in writing. Demonstrated public speaking and consultative skills as well as experience presenting technical subject matter.
  • Series 3, National Commodity Futures Examination, qualified in past 2 years OR will sit for the Series 3 after hired. Series 30, NFA Branch Manager Examination, if applicable.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and expand ACES’ portfolio management Western Interconnect activities.
  • Partner and collaborate with other internal departments such as trading, resource planning, modeling, strategy, capacity, regulatory, business development, middle office, and back office subject matter experts in support of client Western Interconnect portfolio transaction opportunities.
  • Lead the WRTC screening of Western Interconnect term portfolio opportunities and evaluating and selecting key strategic opportunities.
  • Coordinate closely with ACES resource planning, origination, strategy, capacity, contracts, credit, and trading teams to execute, develop, and improve market opportunities in the west resource adequacy, capacity, and power mid-markets.
  • Command excellent working knowledge of portfolio components and risk exposures for clients.
  • Exceed as a lead project manager across various projects, personnel, departments, utilities, and clients.
  • Gather Western Interconnect market intelligence and risk management advice for clients.
  • Construct compelling presentations, reports, and integrated resource plans for and on behalf of ACES clients as needed.
  • Provide reports to senior management and boards of directors of clients and ACES as needed.
  • Expand Western Interconnect service opportunities, extend relationships with existing clients, and provide leads to new business development.
  • Develop Western Interconnect business relationships with counterparties as an agent for multiple clients and administer Western Interconnect request for proposals.
  • Explore and find value in hedge products, working with analytical, trading, modeling, and portfolio strategy staff.
  • Execute commercial deals in Western Interconnect term power products for client portfolios with third-party originators, including other utilities, banks and energy merchant companies.
  • Develop appropriate data, market intelligence and analysis to advise clients and ACES.
  • Execute and coordinate with other ACES WRTC trading management in the development of hedge plans, trading execution strategies, and other innovative solutions to support the portfolio management, asset optimization, and risk mitigation processes.
  • Travel as required to diverse client locations in US.
  • Adhere to all ACES corporate policies and comply with all ACES regulatory requirements, including but not limited to NERC, FERC, and relevant state regulations, as applicable to this position.
  • Any additional responsibilities assigned by management.
