Description:
We are seeking an Animal OR Manager who will ensure that Johns Hopkins facilities and personnel are compliant with Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, and the standards set forth in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Public Health Service Policy, and AAALAC International. Research Animal Resources maintains multiple operating rooms and supports a wide array of animal research projects and species, including but not limited to pigs, nonhuman primates, sheep, rabbits, dogs, and cats. The Animal OR Manager has two primary responsibilities. First is to manage the scheduling and daily operations of the operating rooms overseen and staffed by Research Animal Resources. This includes scheduling labs for surgeries and technical services within central facilities, supervising the team of veterinary technicians providing these services, coordinating veterinary support as needed, and management and delegation of other necessary tasks such as ordering supplies and drugs, cleaning spaces and instruments, and maintaining a successful OR. Second is to coordinate and oversee technical support of animal procedures performed in laboratory spaces not managed by RAR. This includes tracking scheduled procedures and coordinating RAR technical support or oversight as needed, collecting and reviewing procedural records for accuracy and completeness, and collaborating with labs to ensure continued compliance with established protocols and necessary high standards of animal care.
• Manage a team of surgery technicians to ensure outstanding animal care, safe and efficient operations, and a collaborative work environment.
• Ensure that all necessary supplies, drugs, and anesthetic agents are available.
• Assist with personnel management, including performance management, corrective and disciplinary action, and involvement in the new hire selection process and onboarding.
• Establish work assignments, monitor workflow, and maintain adequate inventory of facility-related supplies.
• Provide customer service to researchers to support their research needs as they relate to animal husbandry, supply requests, facility orientation, access, etc.
• Assist in the development, review, and implementation of SOPs as relating to animal care OR operations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in Animal Husbandry, Biology, or related field.
• Five years of relevant experience (with Bachelor’s). Seven years of relevant experience (with Associate’s).
• Additional education may substitute for experience and additional experience may substitute for education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
• Experience in the animal care or veterinary fields.
