Job Description
Summary: The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Position Responsibilities: You will perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, decontaminate, and update patient information. You will collect and store specimens according to established procedures and explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, or other specimen collection clearly and courteously. You will demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles, fully understand all physicians' orders, and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Additionally, you will label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order, check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy, and package specimens for transport. You will store specimen samples according to required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label them, and follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen. You must understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, attend annual department trainings, and answer telephone calls to read laboratory results and satisfy inquiries.
