This position requires a high degree of experience and expertise in manufacturing such as tool design, fixture
design, and manufacturing technology. The candidate needs to have a good understanding of tool design to
combine with process design expertise to provide for improved manufacturability of parts and major
components.
This position will be working with tool design teams in Mexico and India to support factories globally. Provides
direction and solve tooling needs and improve production productivity. Works with multiple groups in the
development of tool designs to ensure the most efficient and cost-effective solution.
Job Duties
This position is actively involved with Caterpillar facilities and suppliers to analyze their current or proposed
product/process designs to determine feasibility of using existing tooling or modifying the designs to improve
process and/or product. Ensures Engineering, Purchasing and shop personnel both at Caterpillar and suppliers
are involved in the approval process so that sound decisions are made which improve manufacturing
processes, quality and/or reduce costs. Uses knowledge gained through years of experience to explain to
suppliers the tooling, dies, fixtures, etc., needed to improve processes.
Determines adaptability of existing corporate applications and prepares feasibility studies for new
applications. Coordinates various existing systems and operations with new systems and operations to ensure
compatibility and directs others to modify systems accordingly to implement total package.
Adheres to established standards, policies and practices relating to quality, cost reduction, safety, ergonomics,
etc., in performing assigned duties.
Group - Weld fatigue, weld simulation, supporting the engineers globally, segment of that is a small tooling design team. One of my peers leads the team and I have the people that support it, this team also partners with the Mexican and Indian teams.
D2D – expect them to partner with Mexico and India teams, when a customer has a tooling design request, it’s how do we partner with them, validating the designs. Person needs a good tooling design experience, heavy fabrications. Tool & Die making, manage projects, how do you create a project plan, manage it, our org on our team will have a couple projects, 5-6, at once and they need to be able to manage D2D and know what to work on through prioritization, initiative is important. Teamwork is essential with this as well. Need someone at least with 3 years of experience with tooling design, no new grads. Heavy fabrication is a strongly preferred skill, but not entirely necessary. If they meet everything else, with say light fabrication, or maybe tooling design but working with heavy fabrication. All will be focused on heavy fabrication, very light on assembly. Would consider candidates with no degree if they have adequate experience – would look at someone with no degree if they had at least 10 years of experience in tooling design. Need fundamental abilities to manage projects, not necessarily a necessary skill for PM experience, but they must be able to self-manage (would be good to ask refs about projects they balanced).
Schedule: M-F, start time is flexible, adjustable to other facilities. But overall normal hours. OT will be low but could happen on occasion, especially while traveling.
Software: Creo, some use solidworks or in a study there could be a couple other ones, but Creo is the most common.
