What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lab Technical Spec position at Advocate Aurora?
Major Responsibilities:
- Performs all duties of the bench staff in the specialty (i.e., Medical Technologist, Cytotechnologist). Performs technical research and development under the direction of the Supervisor/Manager and in coordination with the Research & Development Committee.
- Works with the Supervisor/Manager to develop and implement quality control and quality assurance policies and procedures; directly responsible for validation of processes. Ensures that work is completed in a safe and efficient manner.
- Monitors laboratory safety practices and corrects hazards that exist. Monitors workflow and makes necessary adjustments to complete work in an appropriate time frame. Monitors the preventive maintenance program and regulatory compliance standards to ensure they are met. Participates in the inspection process.
- Coordinates the implementation of standardization with the Standardization Committee. Adheres to Aurora Consolidated Lab's Customer Intimacy Business Model.
- Provides financial evaluations as part of procedures, instrumentation, and/or reagent evaluations.
- Regularly assists the Supervisor with preparation of work schedules and time and attendance system in absence of a Lead Medical Technologist. May develop and coordinate technical staff development including competency testing. Instructs students, residents and new staff as assigned and reviews competencies as needed
- Provides technical expertise to any site as needed; provides technical consultation to both internal and external clients.
- Reviews laboratory results and quality control for accuracy and validity. Documents appropriate information for quality assurance/improvement according to established protocol.
- Utilizes all required computer information systems appropriately.
- Assists in improving the quality and efficiency of laboratory procedures, policies, and processes. Assists in writing new technical procedures and policies and revising current procedures.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:
- Medical Technologist (MT) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), or
- Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification issued by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC).
Education Required:
- Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
Experience Required:
- Typically requires 2 years of experience in Medical Technology or in a similar capacity.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Demonstrates a willingness to work a flexible schedule, which may include alternate site assignment.
- Maintains current knowledge of all technical aspects of the specialty and any computer integration.
- Proficient in the use of laboratory computer systems.
- Maintains knowledge of all accrediting agency standards to ensure compliance.
- Maintains patient confidentiality in and out of the workplace.
- Maintains constructive and effective communication to enhance department performance.
- Maintains current knowledge of and complies with the contents of all pertinent policy and procedure manuals.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
- Frequently required to lift up to 10 lbs. and occasionally required to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to sit, stand or walk the majority of the workday.
- Will be exposed to the following hazards: mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, radiations, reagents, radioisotopes and infectious agents.
- May be required to wear lab coats, gloves, gowns and eye and face protection as needed.
- May require travel, therefore, may be exposed to weather and road conditions.
