Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking a Senior Archaeologist/Principal Investigator for immediate full-time employment in our Cultural Resources practice. The Senior Archaeologist is a core member of the Cultural Resources Program in the region, with responsibility for successfully executing projects and leading all aspects of project implementation. This is a regular, full-time, salaried position that will integrate with AECOM's cultural resources teams operating out of the Sacramento, California and Oakland, California offices. The Archaeologist may serve as a Field Director or Principal Investigator, based on work experience and education. Candidate will contribute to growth of department through marketing pursuits including proposal preparation, interviews, and business development. The Candidate will also be responsible for setting up client focused cultural resources programs (with guidance from our Cultural Resources leads) and executing on large scale, cultural resources contracts.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing projects with large-scale field efforts (survey, testing, data recovery, and monitoring) and intensive schedules

  • Managing and executing archival research, technical report writing, state and federal archaeological permitting, data collection and compilation, and/or GIS mapping.

  • Working thoughtfully and efficiently both independently and as part of a larger cultural resources team.

  • Operating as primary author or reviewer, as appropriate.

  • Supervising personnel in the field, office, and laboratory, as needed.

  • Performing project management duties such as forecasting, tracking, accounting updates, invoicing, progress reports, and scheduling.

  • Reviewing contracts for understanding of scope, fee, schedule, and deliverables, and all other contractual obligations

  • Liaising and developing positive relationships with clients and other stakeholders

  • Knowledge of state and federal environmental regulatory framework, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

  • Organizing data in an efficient and clear manner.

  • Handling multiple tasks and communicating priorities to the Cultural Resources Lead.

  • Operating as primary point of contact for clients and resource agencies on projects, as needed

  • Performing client management duties such as recurring status meetings, milestone check ins, and day-to-day interfacing

  • Flexibility and willingness to support multiple projects, including occasional travel.

  • Innovation and a problem solving.

  • Supporting career development of individuals in the practice

  • Successfully preparing competitive proposals

  • Participating in interviews with large or small teams for a variety of clients

  • Contributing to growth of practice through business development

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a closely related field plus 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

  • Must be willing to travel and conduct fieldwork throughout Northern California.

  • Current valid driver's license is required.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • MA/MS Degree.

  • Ten (10) years of experience in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology and cultural resources management.

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in a supervisory capacity in the field or in the office.

  • Meets the Secretary of Interior's professional qualification standards in Archaeology.

  • Relevant field experience in California.

  • Experience with implementing Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

  • Experience with implementing the California Environmental Quality Act for cultural resources.

  • Advanced knowledge in one or more specialty scientific areas (e.g., lithic or faunal analysis; osteology; historical archaeology)

  • Demonstration of excellent technical writing skills, as well as verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience supervising crews and/or multiple crews on a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies.

  • Experience working with interdisciplinary team of subject matter experts and planners.

  • Proven ability to lead proposals and win work.

  • Knowledge of regional and local regulations

  • Please note that this role can be based anywhere in the United States and compensation data will vary in each location, including higher or lower than the stated range.

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $90,000.00 - $120,000.00.
