Youth Mentorship Coordinator

Application Deadline: Friday, February 25, 2022

Location: Seattle, WA; occasional meetings in SeaTac, WA

Supervisor: Social Services Manager

Salary: part-time (20 hours/week), $30/hour

About the Organization:

African Community Housing & Development (ACHD) is a community-founded organization led by visionary Black women and a community Board of Directors. ACHD works towards an informed African Diaspora immigrant and refugee community that is engaged in the holistic development of families, communities, and environment. ACHD focuses on equitable and culturally-relevant health, legal, and educational services; housing stability and economic development; and land-use, real estate, and property development. ACHD staff speak a collective 12 languages, and the majority identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color.

About the Position:

Through this program, ACHD will lay the groundwork for a long-term youth mentorship program for the African Diaspora immigrant and refugee community. This pilot year will allow us to design and test the program with a core group of mentors and mentees, and incorporate their feedback to improve the program for the years to come.

The program will provide the youth participants a safe environment to be seen, heard, and loved by role models who look like them and have similar lived experiences. They will be able to talk to their mentors about family struggles, career and education goals, and personal development. They will be able to discuss their trauma in a safe environment, and begin to process and heal. In addition, they will be connected to holistic social services and resources via our case management services, ensuring access to housing resources, healthy food, education and job training, and referrals to legal services as needed.

This is a grant-funded position through September 2022 - employment beyond that date will be determined by funding availability.

Position Duties:

  • Administer pilot high school youth mentorship program for African Diaspora immigrant and refugee youth at risk of contact with the criminal justice system
  • Plan and execute three community cafes for mentor-mentee bonding and collaboration, and regular social events for program participants
  • Recruit mentors and mentees, match them according to interests, and ensure each mentor-mentee pairing meets at least three times throughout scope of project
  • Assist in the design and set-up of new Seattle office to ensure it meets the needs of the mentorship program
  • Coordinate with Case Managers to ensure wraparound support for all program participants
  • Provide regular reporting to all grant funders and stakeholders

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with youth, especially high-school-aged
  • Experience with the African Diaspora immigrant and refugee community
  • Experience working one-on-one with youth at risk of contact with the justice system
  • Experience managing programs and budgets
  • Fluency in an African language preferred
  • COVID vaccine verification and background check will be required

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Note: ACHD emphasizes a highly collaborative approach that is rooted in equity and co-learning. Supervisors are to lead with equity and humbleness, recognizing that each staff member brings a highly valuable and essential background and perspective. Accordingly, supervisors are also accountable to staff members, working to ensure they (supervisors) are meeting the needs of staff and providing a healthy and safe environment where feedback and learning is two-way. In other words, supervisors should work to build a positive environment where staff and supervisors learn together, and mistakes are considered a healthy part of personal and professional growth.
