What are the responsibilities and job description for the Surgical Tech CVOR position at Ag Globe Services?

I. JOB SUMMARY
The surgical technologist, using the principles of medical asepsis, prepares the operating room for surgical cases of all specialties and instruments the surgical procedures anticipating the needs of the surgeon. The surgical technologist provides care within the MercyOne North Iowa Standards of Care, AORN Standards of Care and Practice and the Operating Room Policies and Procedures.

II. ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY

A. Reports to: Director of Surgical Services, Clinical Nurse Manager, Clinical Leaders, Registered Nurse
B. Supervises: none
C. Key Working Relationships: patients, surgeons, anesthesia, registered nurses, nurse aides, and central services staff
D. Primary Customer Groups: patients, physicians, anesthesia, inter- and intra-departmental staff

III. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
A. Assists the circulating nurse in assessing the patients physical, psychological, social, spiritual, environmental, and educational needs and helps to develop and implement the plan of care based on sound nursing principles, health center policy and patient/family needs. (Continuous Learner)
B. Provides care to all surgical patients in accordance with the operating room’s performance standards, physician preference cards, and the AORN Standards of Care and Practice. (Adherence to Policy)
C. Assists in setting up rooms, secures safe transport of the patient if needed, confirms correctness of the surgical site, prepares the pre-operative site, instruments the case, manages the sterile field and specimens, and turns the room around under the supervision of the circulating nurse. D. Serves as a steward for the hospital’s human and material resources. Meets productivity expectations of unit/department as defined by unit manager. Identifies accurate changes on surgeons preference cards. Utilizes and maintains appropriate supplies during the case and in the department. (Team Work, Adherence to Policy)
E. Develops and maintains knowledge/skills in all surgical specialties (exception: heart, neuro have dedicated teams). Willing to share knowledge. Completes routine assignments in a timely manner. Takes responsibility/accountability for assigned tasks/duties. Uses available time productively. (Initiative, Continuous Learner)
F. Communicates consistently with colleagues in a professional and respectful manner and accepts assignments willingly. (Communication, Initiative)

I. Responsible for maintaining and participating in departmental/organizational meetings, in services and educational opportunities. Serves or supports process improvement teams, which influence customer satisfaction, clinical outcomes and financial stability.(Problem Identification, Continuous Learner)
J. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations.
K. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments.
L. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development, and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs.
M. Communicates with and performs duties following the philosophy of MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center and the Sisters of Mercy reflecting the organization’s Mission, Values, and Culture Belief.
N. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment.
O. Performs other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, manager or department head.

A. Serves on unit specific or hospital wide committee(s) as requested.
B. Serves as a preceptor.
C. Serves as a resource person.
