What are the responsibilities and job description for the Greenhouse Grower position at Ag Jobs Canada?
West Coast Floral is a wholesale greenhouse in South Surrey producing a wide variety of potted plants for our destination garden center as well as customers throughout western Canada and the Northwestern USA. We grow a full range of annuals, tropicals and flowering plants in our 200,000 ft2 production facility.
Responsibilities
• Maintain irrigation, fertilizers, and climate for each crop's specific needs.
• Monitor growing conditions and discuss changes in climate, nutrition, and growth controls.
• Prepare space required for planned production.
• Monitor crop health for presence of pests, disease, or any other pathogens and implement control measures when needed.
• Apply fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides as directed
• Maintain accurate records of monitoring and spraying in accordance with CGP export program.
• Evaluate plant health and growth rates, applying PGR when needed and adjusting feeding schedules.
• Monitor EC and PH levels.
• In conjunction with production manager, assist in crop planning and scheduling.
• Inspect greenhouse equipment, ensuring regular maintenance is being performed.
• May assist in training new employees in growing techniques and activities.
• Maintain current knowledge of growing techniques and technologies, on-going learning with courses, webinars and presentations that would contribute to the success of your role.
• Thorough knowledge of water lines and be aware of and monitor conditions such as ventilation, light conditions, temperatures, and humidity.
• Safe handling and application of chemicals, fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides.
• Abide by WorkSafe BC Joint Health and Safety Regulations
• Greenhouse sanitation planning and execution.
• Assist the Greenhouse Manager with other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Experience
• Minimum of 5 years experience in a greenhouse, extensive knowledge in plant health and understanding of pathogens and control measures, fertilizers, and irrigation.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to define and solve problems, collect data, and draw a valid conclusion when identifying plant diseases and insects.
• Legally permitted to work in Canada.
• Willingness to work weekends or evenings on rotation (on-call)*
• Ability to lift up to 40lbs.
• Must have own transportation (location is not transit accessible).
• Pesticide applicator license is an asset, will be required to obtain upon hire.
