POSITION: Soil Conservation/Range Technician Senior
SALARY: $20.62 - 23.90/hour DOE
REPORTS TO: Soil Conservationist/Range Management Specialist
LOCATION: Nespelem, WA
Basic Functions: This is a Non-Exempt full time seasonal position. Gathers data necessary to develop conservation plans and land use feasibility studies. Employee gathers management data necessary to map locations of invasive/noxious plants. Inventories and records forage density, production, utilization and species, evaluates plant vigor, rate of growth, evaluates soil depth, compaction and erosion. Analyzes, evaluates, and determines the trends of range and soil conditions. Applies integrated pest management control methods to prevent the spread of noxious weeds. Inspects and ensures grazing unit permittee's are in compliance with permit specifications. Inspects and approves work performed by contractors engaged in range improvement or pest management practices. Must maintain pesticide license and keep up to date on current laws and regulations governing the proper and safe use of chemical pesticides during duration of employment.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Training:
- Typically requires A.A.S. Degree in Range Management, Natural Resources or closely related field.
- Typically requires 36 months of experience as a Range or Soil Technician and a satisfactory work performance review.
- Must possess a Valid Washington State Drives License and be eligible for the Tribes vehicle insurance and be maintained throughout duration of employee.
- Must qualify for U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operations Identification Card.
- Must successfully clear a federal and tribal background investigation. These clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
- Must poses or obtain a Washington State Pesticide Public Operators License within 3 months from date of hire; failure to do so will result in immediate termination.
- Must be able to carry a backpack sprayer weighing 35lbs over steep terrain for long periods of time. Ability to pass the Mt. Tolman Fire Moderate or Arduous pack test.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to collect data utilizing GPS technology and process data into appropriate format necessary to display data in applicable mapping software.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize ArcGIS Pro software to construct maps and display data utilizing available map layers and shape files or geodatabases.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize computer software such as Microsoft Word and Excel to create and manage files necessary to document information to meet reporting requirements.
- Ability to identify common forage species and noxious weeds within the reservation.
- Must have a knowledge of safe methods used for noxious weed control applications including occupational hazards and safety precautions as required by Washington State Laws, Federal Laws and Tribal Laws.
- Experience selecting, mixing, and applying restricted and general use pesticides.
- Experience using and maintaining pesticide application equipment.
- Experience using and maintaining UTV's and ATV's
- Experience with and knowledge of sampling methods or protocols commonly utilized to collect data such as forage utilization, forage production, species composition, plant vigor or soil erosion risk.
- Knowledge of accepted livestock marking, registered brands, branding methods and roundup process.
- Experience planting grasses, shrubs or trees.
- Experience applying fertilizers.
- Experience utilizing mechanical weed control treatments.
- Experience collecting and releasing biological weed control agents.
- Knowledge of commonly used construction specifications for range improvements such as fences, watering points and cattle guards.
- Knowledge of and ability to utilize computers to: create and maintain files, produce documents and keep records required for reporting purposes.
- Experience inspecting and approving work performed by contractors.
- Experience in communicating professionally with other agency staff and local producers.
- Knowledge of grazing permit requirements.
