POSITION SUMMARY
The yard driver is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trucks, trailers, and other vehicles within a designated yard or facility. They ensure the smooth flow of traffic and the timely positioning of vehicles for loading, unloading, and transportation operations.
The yard driver plays a critical role in ensuring the efficient operation of transportation yards and facilities. By safely and effectively maneuvering vehicles, maintaining clear communication, and adhering to safety protocols, they contribute to the smooth flow of goods and materials through the supply chain.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
The specific minimum competencies needed to perform the essential duties of the job include knowledge, skills, abilities, level of education, and experience necessary for successful performance. These competencies are generally demonstrated through specific service, education, or training.
Knowledge:
- Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements, if required.
- Previous experience operating yard trucks or similar equipment preferred.
- Good driving record with no history of accidents or violations.
Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to maneuver vehicles safely in tight spaces and congested areas.
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow instructions.
- Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and inspection procedures.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the job, including sitting for extended periods, bending, lifting, and operating controls.
Level of Experience:
- Previous experience operating yard trucks or similar equipment preferred.
Level of Education:
- GED or High School Diploma

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The core tasks, duties, and responsibilities that must be performed on the job.
- Vehicle Movement: Safely operate yard trucks, also known as terminal tractors or spotter trucks, to move trailers and containers within the yard.
- Spotting: Position trailers at loading docks or designated storage areas according to schedule and operational requirements.
- Inspection: Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of yard trucks and trailers to ensure they are in proper working condition and report any maintenance issues promptly.
- Safety: Adhere to all safety procedures and regulations while operating yard equipment and working in the yard environment. This includes proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to traffic rules.
- Communication: Maintain clear and effective communication with yard supervisors, truck drivers, and other personnel to coordinate vehicle movements and ensure operational efficiency.
- Documentation: Accurately record and document trailer movements, inspections, and any incidents or damages that occur during operations.
- Equipment Maintenance: Assist with basic maintenance tasks for yard equipment, such as fueling, greasing, and minor repairs, or report maintenance needs to the appropriate personnel.
- Yard Organization: Assist in organizing and maintaining the yard layout to optimize space utilization and facilitate efficient operations.
