What are the responsibilities and job description for the Ranger position at Ak-Chin Indian Community?
Three (3) years of experience in livestock, animal control, law enforcement, veterinary office or animal shelter OR any combination of training, education or experience which demonstrates the potential ability to perform the duties of the position including graduation from high school or equivalent. Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license and be able to meet the Community’s insurance carrier requirements. Must be able to successfully complete an extensive background check. Prefer a Bachelor’s degree in Range Management or closely related degree.
- Cooperates and works with the inspectors of livestock as appointed in accordance with the laws of the State of Arizona, primarily the enforcement of disease prevention and control of animals.
- Enforcement of the Ak-Chin Indian Community Livestock Ordinance.
- Authenticates bills of sale of livestock, brands and marks, deliver certificate of acknowledgement thereof under their hand and seal, and makes acknowledgement to applications for brands and marks.
- Provides livestock brand inspections to Ak-Chin Indian Community livestock owners for transport into and off the Community.
- Preserves the health and welfare of livestock within the Community.
- Responds to citizen calls for service; captures, contains, and impounds animals at-large, including sick, injured, and vicious animals; relocates wild animals; investigates animal bite reports; collects and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Investigates nuisance and animal cruelty complaints; interviews witnesses; notifies owners and involved parties of animal violations and corrective actions; writes reports, issues citations, and prepares court documents.
- Investigates request of service for dogs running at large, barking, nuisance, and livestock related issues.
- Seizes animals as allowed by the Ak-Chin Indian Community.
- Transports animals to shelter; picks up and disposes of dead animals.
- Provides animal related information to public; responds to questions regarding animal and rabies control issues.
- Assists in operating a Tribal animal shelter in accordance with all laws, ordinances and established procedures; cleans and maintains safe and sanitary conditions in the animal shelter.
- Performs basic animal care including cleaning and feeding animals, medical care, and restraint and infection control procedures.
- Evaluates animals for survival and adoptability, and euthanizes animals as necessary.
- Writes correspondence and reports; processes reports, forms, fees and files.
- Appears in court and testifies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of Ak-Chin Indian Community laws and ordinances relating to the control, protection, licensing, impounding and disposal of animals.
- Knowledge of general safety practices, legal liabilities and responsibilities, animal capture and restraint techniques and equipment.
- Knowledge of symptoms, causes, procedures and reporting requirements for rabies control and other common animal disease.
- Knowledge of the principles of record keeping and records management
- Knowledge of inspecting livestock for brands, sex and breed for identification and ownership purposes
- Skill in communicating effectively, act promptly and use good judgment in emergencies.
- Skill in capturing, controlling, containing, and transporting sick, injured, and rabid animals.
- Skill in identifying various types of animals, and recognizing abnormal behavior and symptoms of animal diseases.
- Skill in exercising patience, care and compassion in dealing with animals.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with employees, officials, other agencies, and the general public.
- Skill in following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.
- Skill in dealing tactfully with and inspire public confidence while enforcing rules and regulations.
- Skill in typing and preparing reports documenting the facts and actions regarding criminal/civil incidents.
- Skill in using a variety of specialized law enforcement equipment.
- Skill in operating a motor vehicle.
- Skill in communicating using a standard two-way radio.
- Skill in conducting investigations of criminal activities.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
- Ability to lift a maximum of 150 pounds
- Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position
- Ability to handle livestock, move quickly, climb fences, etc. in order to avoid serious injury.
