Summary: Under general supervision, performs ultrasonic imaging examinations for patients in ANMC clinics.

Responsibilities:

All

P erforms ultrasonic imaging examinations according to department procedures. Locates and records internal elements of the body, including blood vessels and organs, and identifies any anomalies indicative of disease, injury, or other medically significant conditions. Performs ultrasound evaluations, including screenings, film interpretation, and level 3 obstetrical ultrasounds. Assists physician with invasive procedures. Performs portable procedures when needed.

A djusts equipment and calms patient to eliminate test artifacts. Monitors the patient for potentially dangerous physical and emotional changes. Recognizes abnormal changes and immediately notifies physician. Evaluates test results for clarity and accuracy; able to review tests with peers. Informs physicians of preliminary findings as requested and according to Department procedures. Distributes completed test results to physicians and service providers. Maintains patient charts, enters diagnosis and billing codes, logs data into patient information systems, and updates file systems for tests performed. On call responsibility is an expectation of the position with on-site arrival within one (1) hour of contact.

C leans and sterilizes equipment and work space. Recognizes equipment malfunctions and readjusts equipment or refers for repair. Trains and cross-trains other clinical staff as required. Instructs patients in pretest preparation, answers questions and explains procedures.

P erforms other duties as assigned.

U LTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST II

A cts as a mentor for Ultrasound Technologist I. May train Technologists and students as required.

U LTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST III

M entors Ultrasound Technologist I, II and students.

A ssists in improvements and processes in the department.

T akes on leadership role in absence of lead technologist.

K nowledge of Alaska Tribal Health System, ANTHC, and Alaska Native culture(s) and politics.

K nowledge of ultrasound film processing techniques.

K nowledge of diagnostic imaging equipment.

K nowledge of anatomy/physiology and disease process.

K nowledge of ultrasound imaging examination protocols and patient preparation for evaluation.

K nowledge of emergency procedures, sterile practices, infection control, and other applicable practices.

S kill in interpersonal relationships.

S kill in monitoring patient responses.

S kill in utilizing ultrasonic equipment and performing ultrasound testing procedures.

S kill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.

S kill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

M INIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

A ssociate’s Degree in Diagnostic Ultrasound. Progressively responsible work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education

R egistered Diagnostic Sonographer (ARDMS) or be registry eligible and complete registry within six (6) months from start of position.
