What are the responsibilities and job description for the Boat Crew Manager position at AlaskaX?

Responsible for the training and development of the “RHIB Boat Captain” and “Boat Crew.” Responsible for supervising the staff, resolving any employee or guest conflicts in the day-to-day operations, conferring with Upper Management when applicable. Ensures employees adhere to company policies and procedures. Additionally, performs all aspects of the “RHIB Boat Captain” and “Boat Crew” positions. 

  MAIN JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  •  Responsible for ensuring our guests, employees, and animals experience the “E.X.C.U.R.S.I.O.N. of a lifetime” and making sure this experience is extended to non-employees our staff members encounter 
  • Ensures employees adhere to the company’s service standards, policies, and procedures and answers any questions or concerns employees or guests may have regarding policies and procedures 
  • Relates employees’ job performance and conformance to the company’s service standards, policies, and procedures and consistently provides feedback, both positive and negative, to employees and recommends appropriate action as needed to Upper Management 
  • Leads the training of employees in job performance and conformance to the company’s service standards, policies, and procedures 
  • Responsible for handling employee discipline issues and discussing job performance problems with employees to identify causes and concerns and to work on resolving them.  In addition, is responsible for reporting performance concerns to Upper Management. 
  • Provides employees with consistent feedback, both positive and negative, and recommends appropriate action as needed to Upper Management 
  • Regularly attends manager meetings, including the Friday management team meeting 
  • Maintain open and consistent communication with Upper Management 
  • Performs monthly inspections on all RHIB boats and routinely ensures equipment is maintained properly 
  • Performs on site time and quality inspections on all staff members 
  • Resolves guests’ concerns and/or complaints and provides employees with guidance in handling these issues as best as possible 
  • Responsible for the safety of guests, employees, and animals 
  • Maintains first aid supplies in all RHIB boats 
  • Conducts weekly staff team meetings 
  • Holds monthly staff team appreciation events 
  • Audits the Captain logs daily  
  • Coordinates with Maintenance Manager in maintaining a service schedule 

  ADDITIONAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (RHIB Boat Captain and Boat Crew duties):  

  • Ensures guests experience the “E.X.C.U.R.S.I.O.N. of a lifetime” by being attentive to the needs and/or wants of the guests, answering any and all questions guests may have throughout the excursion, and notifying management of unhappy guests and/or obtaining guests’ information for management to contact them 
  • Safely transports guests to and from Glacier Point while adhering to the timing of the tour (including before and after) 
  • Provides guests with accurate, quality information throughout the duration of the excursion 
  • Assures the safety of the guests by conducting a pre-trip inspection daily, driving at a safe rate of speed at all times, assisting guests into and out of the boat, reviewing safety guidelines with the guests, and ensuring children stay with their parents at all times 
  • Responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the boat and fueling as needed 
  • Assists in preforming maintenance tasks on the boat by immediately fixing boat problems (if possible) and reporting any issues Maintenance 
  • Communicates accurate information to the appropriate staff when required and as needed (radioing in the guest count to Glacier Point, radioing to the office when appropriate, communicating with the dock, etc.) 
  • Transports supplies to and from Glacier Point as needed 
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the boat 
  • Assists guests getting into and out of all modes of transport 
  • Presents guests with quality, accurate information during the tour 
  • Presents guests with safety information 
  • Assists the Captain in docking and fueling the boat and any other boat maneuvers as needed 
  • Greets the guests on the pier and escorts them to/from the boat 
  • Watches for wildlife throughout the tour and assists guests with picture taking

  QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Must possess a valid Captain’s License. 
  • Must be able to pass a Coast Guard drug screening. 

  ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:  

  • All work is performed outside, so will be subject to possible adverse weather conditions and variations in temperature. 
  • Will be subject to noise, to include but not limited to, constant engine noise 
  • Will be subject to dust, odors, and contact with water and/or other liquids 
  • Will be subject to hazardous conditions (working with different machinery, etc) 

  PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF THE JOB:  

  • Must be able to lift and carry a 40lb weight for a distance of 200 feet 
  • Position involves frequent (usually at least 2.5 hours a day but no more than 5.5 hours a day) standing, walking, handling objects, grasping items, & manipulating machinery and small items 
  • Position involves occasional (usually no more than 2.5 hours a day) sitting, carrying, balancing, bending, stooping, and kneeling
