SUMMARY


Under the general direction of the Operations Manager, this position effectively manages, supervises and plans day-to-day operations and all related activities for multiple shifts of the facility's iron melting and refractories operations. Responsible for the oversight of producing molten ductile iron to meet customer specifications.  Administers the ordering of materials, the repairs of production equipment and determines the work output of both direct and indirect employees, in the refractories area as well as processing, melting and delivery of molten metals produced in the facility. Ensures workforce completes all job duties in a safe and cost-efficient manner. Responsible for the overall safety of employees, meeting departmental budgets, and maintaining departmental cost effectiveness.



Responsibilities include but not limited to:


  • Manages the performance, safety and health of salaried and hourly personnel in the department. Performs monthly safety inspection of the department, conducts accident investigations, corrects unsafe working conditions, and ensures employees safety meetings are conducted weekly. Communicates and enforces the company policies and safety rules. Conducts or coordinates safety training, investigates accidents, corrects unsafe conditions, maintains department housekeeping protocols.
  • Directs and plans day-to-day departmental operations for multiple shifts of the melting and refractories department. Reviews work schedules in process to coordinate with production schedule and revises to meet immediate customer demand situations. Assigns workforce to properly utilize available equipment and machines. Determines the crew structure and assigns crews by standards for the job. Determines manning requirements for overtime.
  • Manages and directs the activities of the Melting Supervisors. Directs and coordinates the training of personnel in the proper methods of producing, processing and delivery of molten metals and breakout, patch and repair of refractories. Administers departmental disciplinary issues, vacation requests and attendance programs.
  • Conducts or participates in departmental meetings relating to safety, production, scrap, and shipping schedules. Suggests and implements new ideas and methods designed to increase operation throughput and decrease operating and or maintenance downtime and expenses. Helps in the development of new or tests improved methods to increase effectiveness and decrease costs within the finishing department. Meets with suppliers on new or improved equipment, oversees the implementation of innovative ideas, and monitors variances.
  • Monitors and authorizes all spending within the department. Alerts Plant Manager when costs are exceeding established spending goals, prepares records and reports of time worked and overtime worked. Maintains SPC charts and key measurement charts.
  • Periodically monitors scrap materials and molten metal processed for conformance to customer and production requirements. Analyze and report problems associated with molten metal, refractories and or furnace operations which may affect efficiency of production lines. Determines the types of defect(s) identified during processing and reports the same to molding and quality departments for corrective measures. Modifies techniques and or equipment to salvage defective metals which may still meet customer requirements.  
  • Periodically examines all machinery and equipment used in melting and refractories department and determines causes of malfunction, inefficiency and or reasons for repairs. Coordinates scheduled downtime to assist maintenance department with required repairs through written maintenance or safety work orders. Ensures that machines and equipment are safe for continued operation. 
  • Develops setup, production and safety procedures based on former knowledge, proven effectiveness, and perceived improvements to minimize downtime. Oversees the safe completion of all tasks and coordinates the completion of safety work processes occurring on the shift.
  • Maintains up to date production and safety procedures on all machines and equipment. Informs plant management of any identified safety violations or potential hazards within the melting department. Manages the productivity of all employees in the department. Works with Industrial Engineering on productivity improvements, incentive and standard changes, monitors individual as well as group performance relevant to productivity and downtime, and demands adherence to departmental goals
  • Periodically examines tools and equipment used by employees to ensure they are maintained in satisfactory working condition and they are repaired / replaced as needed. Oversees the ordering and requisitioning of departmental supplies. Works with vendors and engineering on new or improved equipment and or processes.
  • Monitor FIFO system to ensure it is being followed to eliminate scrap caused by non-compliance. Assists quality department in segregation of suspect materials until proper disposition has been determined. Inspects completed work to ensure the work conforms to requirements of customer specifications.   
  • Maintains an effective and productive employee / management relationship with employees working on the shift.  Directs      the training of new hires, administers performance review system, counsels’ employees on job performance, enforces plant work rules, enforces absentee control program, attends labor-management meetings, and processes grievances.

Requirements

REQUIRED SKILLS 

  • Ability to analyze complex problems and identify viable solutions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate solutions and assist others to implement solutions. 
  • Ability to work with others, in a Union environment, to resolve issues or complete projects.
  • Ability to research parts, drawings, diagrams and schematics.
  • Basic Computer (PC) skills are required.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: 4-year degree (preferred)
  • Previous experience in Melting and Refractories with Coreless and Channel Induction Furnaces.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate (written and oral) at all levels of the organization. ? 
  • Willing to work extended hours, holidays, and weekends as required.
  • Capable of working effectively in a dynamic team environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This person works in a fast-paced environment and must be able to make timely decisions and communicate directives to ensure efficient use of resources. The nature of the automotive industry results often in changing priorities, and the candidate must be able to adjust as required to allow them to meet required expectations. The person works in manufacturing office conditions with frequent exposure to production floor environment (50%) to noise, odors, dust, drafts, chemicals, operating machinery, temperature extremes, hazardous substances, etc. Long periods of walking and standing may be required.
