This position is the Automation Leader for manufacturing operations at an Amazon facility located in the U.S. This position is responsible for driving world class manufacturing automation solutions to scale operations globally. This position is also a key member of a strategic team tasked to improve global supply flexibility.
Key job responsibilities
• Innovate, design and develop cost effective automation solutions for assembly and pack out operations. This will involve designing (3D CAD) of automation work cell layout.
• Define, expand, and explore the design space for complex, multidisciplinary robotics and automation problems.
• Derive functional and design requirements from product requirements documents, identify and analyze the cross-functional tradeoffs between design alternatives, including impact on performance, schedule, cost, risk, complexity, and scale.
• Work with an interdisciplinary team to execute product designs from concept to production; including design, prototyping, validation, testing, and certification.
• Coordinate with all other cross-functions to ensure project success.
• Work with Device Hardware teams to enforce design for manufacturing and automation.
• Possess a thorough understanding of technical principles and concepts in mechanical engineering.
• Provide mechanical engineering leadership, conduct experiments, simulations, data collection, perform system and sub-system level testing. Identify design choices to ensure our products are safe, reliable, and usable, and can be deployed and supported at Amazon scale.
• Write functional specifications, design verification plans, evaluations, test procedures, FMEA documents.
• Drive technical issues related to manufacturing (assembly and pack out) to closure, ensuring consistent execution of the factory’s quality and production plans.
A day in the life
The right candidate will possess an expert understanding of technical principles and concepts in mechanical or mechatronics engineering. The candidate will have demonstrated experience leading complex design/engineering projects, and will have a well-rounded technical background in complex inter-disciplinary systems.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• BS in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
• 10 yrs of experience in hardware solutions for automation, robotics, or similar area having demonstrated a proven ability to enforce design for manufacturing and automation
• Production experience in high volume manufacturing.
• Demonstrated experience working with and leading automation integrators.
• Demonstrated ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways
• Demonstrated ability to gain deep understanding of the business and end user needs quickly, and to proficiently translate needs into the correct technology solution.
• Able to provide the customer and company-wide perspective to detailed technical decisions.
• Excellent written (white papers) and oral communication skills
• Fluent in 3D CAD and CAE software
• Manufacturing knowledge and relevant work experience in Supplier or Product Quality or Product Reliability.
• Experience with quality concepts/tools/methods such as 8D, DOE, APQP, PPAP, FMEA, Measurement Systems Analysis, etc.
• Demonstrated experience implementing quality engineering principles through development programs
• Experience in qualifying assembly automation machines FAT, SAT
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• MS in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
• Technical expertise in at least one domain: Industrial Automation, Robotics, Human Centered Design
• Demonstrated experience incubating and commercializing new technology, working closely with research scientists and technical teams from idea generation through implementation.
• Proficiency with GD&T and CFD-based analysis tools.
• Demonstrated understanding of engineering documentation, electrical and mechanical diagrams, and standard operating procedures.
• Strong expertise in Mechanical 2D/3D structure design, tooling design or motor control system, gear box design and tolerance analysis.
