Position Description

Ambri, an energy company commercializing innovative battery technology developed at MIT, is seeking an R&D Engineer to support the post-mortem cell analysis and materials characterization of liquid metal battery cells and components. This individual will utilize analytical laboratory techniques and instrumentation to collect and interpret data for the purposes of failure mode identification and mitigation, novel design evaluation, quality assurance, and understanding the fundamental behavior of materials during cell operation. These techniques will include Scanning Electron Microcopy (SEM), X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis (XRF), and X-Ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD) among others. Responsibilities include:

 

  • Supporting product development through hands-on data collection and imaging of samples, interpretation and analysis of results, and documentation and communication of findings
  • Maintaining an efficient working environment through the maintenance and upkeep of analytical instrumentation, stocking of consumables and lab supplies, and organization of the sample storage inventory
  • Expanding the analytical capabilities of the team through development of new and improved analytical approaches or methods of sample preparation
  • Assuring the consistency of results through the documentation of operating procedures and written instructions

 


Requirements

  • BS degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a similar field. Candidates with 3-5 years of relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Ability to understand the fundamental scientific principles underlying the operation of a liquid metal battery, including basic concepts within the following topics: electrochemistry, chemical thermodynamics and phase transitions, and mechanical properties of materials.
  • Familiarity working in a laboratory environment and the ability to understand and follow basic laboratory safety practices.
  • Previous experience operating an SEM or XRF or working with the acquired data is preferred.
  • Self-motivating individual, capable of establishing and adhering to suitable project timelines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
