What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Electrochemist position at Ambri?
Ambri, an energy startup commercializing an innovative battery technology first developed at MIT, is seeking a Senior Electrochemist to explore and evaluate cell chemistry modifications for next-generation lower-cost and/or higher performing versions of Ambri’s Liquid Metal™ battery cell products.
Position Overview
Ambri is seeking an individual contributor to be a senior member of Ambri’s newly formed Applied Research team. The position requires working collaboratively with our Applied Research and Cell Development teams to improve Ambri’s cell chemistry to further reduce cost and/or achieve greater performance for next generation cell products. This role requires someone who has in-depth understanding of and experience with electrochemical systems, with a strong preference towards someone experienced with molten salt electrochemistry, liquid reactive metals, and/or other high temperature electrochemical systems.
The work will involve a combination of collaboration with an established external research partner, as well as in-house hands-on experiments, testing, and development, with dedicated equipment such as gloveboxes, furnaces, and battery testers.
This role requires someone that can quickly understand high level objectives, formulate a systematic approach to identifying and exploring options worth testing, excels at hands-on testing and R&D, provides clear communication to colleagues and research partners, has a collaborative working style while also being comfortable with engaging in critical discussions to ensure we are making as much progress as possible.
The individual in this role will be called upon to be an innovative problem solver, creative scientist, and provide technical leadership and direction. He/she will identify new practical formulations based on modeling, test results, and practical experience, perform clear and quantitative analysis comparing attributes and characteristics of different approaches, and communicate results and new concepts effectively with others within and outside the team.
Responsibilities:
- Quickly establish an understanding of overall requirements and targets for next generation cell chemistries
- Identify new opportunities for future chemistry development, aligned with Ambri’s overall product roadmap, including performance and cost goals
- Manage the rapid development of new/next-gen chemistries, though a combination of working with existing development/R&D partners and bringing online new equipment for in-house development activities
- Create test plans for new chemistries to evaluate their performance relative to our targets/requirements, and work with other team members to ensure that the results provide clear evidence of improved performance or reduced cost
- Ensure that the results are recorded, tracked, summarized, and communicated with other team members
Requirements:
- Must have at least a PhD in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field, with a focus on electrochemistry, preferably with molten salts and/or liquid metals, or experience with other high temperature electrochemical (>300 °C) processes. Extensive direct and hands-on experience with electrochemistry is a must.
- Demonstrated in-depth scientific and practical engineering understanding of electrochemical characterization techniques, preferrable with high temperature systems
- Demonstrated excellent practical and grounded problem-solving skills
- Minimum 10 years of R&D based on materials science/engineering or chemistry, primarily with electrochemical systems
- Strong technical leadership to establish and lead projects; must have extensive experience establishing new ideas/projects and actively managing those projects through to successful outcomes
- Must have excellent English written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated ability of working well within a team and independently to achieve results
