What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pipefitter Technician position at Amentum?
Amentum is seeking a Industrial Pipefitter Technician for our operations and maintenance team in Waterloo, IA!
Typical work schedule is Monday – Friday; hours may vary based on business demand.
Responsible for installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing high pressure piping systems and equipment, such as steam heating, steam generation, hydraulic systems, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, and circulating pumps and radiators. This position gives work direction and assistance to lower-level technicians.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Lay out work and measure to locate position of pipe from drawings or other written specifications.
- Cut various sizes of pipe to correct lengths with chisel and hammer, oxyacetylene torch or pipe-cutting machines, threading pipe with stocks and dies.
- Responsible for bending pipe by hand-driven or power-driven machines.
- Assemble pipe with couplings and fastening pipe to hangers.
- Make standard shop computations relating to pressures, flow and size of pipe required; and make standard tests to determine whether finished pipes meet specification.
- Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or demonstrated equivalent experience.
- 6 years experience as a mechanical maintenance technician, pipefitter or millwright in an industrial setting, or demonstrated equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have the ability to work in an aerial lift or scissor lift at heights up to 30 feet or higher.
- Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test.
- Ability to aquire a valid Driver’s License.
- This position does not include sponsorship for United States work authorization.
- Ability to obtain a security access badge at our client’s location.
- Ability to work various shifts, weekends, holidays and alternative work schedules. Must be willing to work overtime when required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to regularly lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to regularly climb extension ladders, roof ladder, stepladders, and stairs at least 10 times during shift.
- Requires the flexibility to bend/stoop, squat repetitive during shift.
- Ability to regularly kneel repetitive for shift.
- Ability to move in a 90-degree fashion on a repetitive basis for shift.
- Ability to stretch/reach on a repetitive basis for shift.
- Ability to walk extensively throughout the plant during shift.
- Ability to use a Company/Client approved utility knife.
- Ability to differentiate colors pertaining to wire color-coding.
- Some tasks will require repetitive wrist movement.
- Ability to interact with all clients in a professional and friendly manner despite periods of stress.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or trade school certification in Industrial Electrical, Industrial Mechanical, Industrial Technology, HVAC or a related field.
- Experience installing and fabricating various piping, including black pipe, galvanized pipe, and all variations of PVC as well as the proper fittings for each application.
- Experience performing pipefitting, welding, fabrication, and millwright related work.
- Experience using shop tools such as pipe-threading machines, alignment tools, drill presses, and general hand tools.
- Experience identifying proper fittings for fabrication and installation of hydraulic hoses and water hoses.
- Experience troubleshooting and repairing hydraulic pumps and motors.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and repairing components of fire and life safety systems.
- Experience troubleshooting and repairing a variety of conveyor systems.
- Experience in welding using MIG, TIG, and arc welders.
- Experience working on Harpoon Systems.
- Experience with operating a 5 ton mobile crane.
- Certified in B.A.S. or Energy Management systems.
