AAAS has an exciting opportunity for a Deputy Director to join our Inclusive STEMM Ecosystems for Equity & Diversity (ISEED) team. The Deputy Director will support the strategic direction and operation of one of AAAS’s marquee initiatives, STEMM Equity Achievement (SEA) Change. SEA Change is a comprehensive initiative from AAAS that implements a proven self-assessments process to effect sustainable change toward diverse, equitable, and inclusive STEMM at U.S. institutions of higher education. The Deputy Director provides team leadership, strategic direction, and operationalization for this initiative and reports to the Director of ISEED. You will serve as a representative of both the SEA Change Founder and Director and the ISEED Director in developing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders and will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on tomorrow’s STEMM workforce.

What You’ll Do

  • Provide strategic leadership, direction, and advanced project management for AAAS’s SEA Change (SC) Initiative, a $1.7M initiative supported by approximately eight grants and a team of six people implementing SC Awards, SC Institute, SC Community, & SC Biomedicine.
    • Monitor SC’s revenue streams and expense tracking to support the development of an annual operating budget.
    • Provide updates to SEA Change’s business plan including resource allocation, project needs assessments, financial forecasting, and risk assessment and mitigation.
    • Conceptualize and implement initiative-level workplans for activities, communication, dissemination, and collaborator engagement
      • Evaluate and communicate the status of project activities and their success or impact using logic models, assessment plans, and other analytic measures.
      • Organize and contribute to SC team members’ preparation and dissemination of project deliverables, reports, publications, presentations, and oversee creation of media-rich content.
    • Provide leadership and management to the project team and high-level oversight of external contractors in support of convenings and projects.
    • Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of virtual and in-person convenings to support project goals and deliverables.
  • Support the Directors in their development and maintenance of strategic funder relations.
    • Support pre-award grant development through partner and funder identification, new project concept development, and proposal and budget preparation.
    • Oversee post-award grant management through project workplans, management of grant expenditures, execution of project activities, assessment and evaluation activities, regular project reports, and dissemination of project deliverables
  • Provide intellectual contribution and research to ISEED initiatives, and specifically SEA Change.
    • Maintain understanding and expertise of research related to postsecondary DEI in STEMM and institutional transformation.
    • Develop project-related content highlighting research to support underrepresented groups in STEMM and equity-focused systemic change.
    • Maintain familiarity with issues affecting project and ability to act as liaison with scientific, engineering, educational, governmental groups for community outreach to discuss AAAS programs and issues.
    • Collaborate with the ISEED & SEA Change Directors to develop and publish content for scholarly and public outlets (e.g., articles, presentations, panels, etc.)
  • ISEED Unit Support
    • Contribute to developing, implementing, and iterating the ISEED strategic plan.
    • Work collaboratively to extend ISEED’s achievements on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), institutional change and workforce-oriented plans nationally and internationally.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Doctorate in STEMM, Education, or a related field (or demonstrated success on projects of similar scope). 7-10 years’ experience in program development and implementation with responsibilities including business plan development, financial management, assessment of program impact, and project management
  • Demonstrated experience working in STEMM Education or STEMM diversity, equity & inclusion efforts
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience in organizational change or systemic change efforts.
  • Previous supervision or team leadership experience and management of direct reports
  • Demonstrated experience writing, receiving, and managing grants, and budget
  • Experience with STEMM policy and initiatives related to education, diversity, equity & inclusion preferred
  • Expert knowledge and experience engaging with inclusive postsecondary STEMM enterprise, capacity-building issues for change and transformation, and broadening participation in STEMM.
    • Experience supporting institutional change/transformation and/or DEI efforts.
    • Demonstrated research and assessment skills including the ability to analyze and synthesize extant literature, collect, analyze, and make meaning from quantitative and/or qualitative data, and the ability to inform decision-making based upon such evidence.
    • Experience implementing and/or leading a large or complex initiative.
    • Preferred experience working with organizations in a variety of sectors including government, industry, and nonprofit.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and strong interpersonal skills to make decisions balanced with an understanding of when to consult with supervisor for guidance, strategic direction, and problem-solving.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and projects while providing supervision to project teams to enable the successful progress and completion of project goals.
    • Advanced project management skills including project launch, development, promotion and implementation, communication and dissemination, financial management—including financial forecasting, and collaborator engagement.
    • Strong grant writing, concept development, and procurement skills.
    • Ability to review, evaluate, and communicate the effectiveness of projects and their impact utilizing logic models, assessment plans, and other analytic measures.
    • Excellent written, verbal, visual, and online communication and editing skills including the preparation and dissemination of project deliverables, project reports, publications, presentations, and oversee creation of media-rich content.
    • Ability to act as liaison with scientific, engineering, educational, governmental groups for community outreach to discuss ISEED and AAAS programs and issues.
  • Conceptualize in-person and virtual convenings to support ISEED and project goals.
  • Technical skills, including familiarity with content management systems and with contemporary software packages.
  • Working knowledge of social media networking, individual platforms, general trends, and experience cultivating new communities.
  • Ability to serve as a representative of the ISEED Director and SEA Change Directors and AAAS in various internal and external capacities, effectively advancing the unit’s priorities and the Directors’ strategic vision.
  • Strong history and ability to provide concrete examples demonstrating a track record of achieving ambitious results, having high expectations for self and others, logical and data-based decision-making, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, taking responsibility, orientation towards continuous improvement, and learning quickly.
