Job Description
The American Library Association is looking for an experienced Infrastructure Administrator/Cloud Engineer for its IT department.
Under the supervision of the Director of Infrastructure this position will be responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and supporting ALA's IT infrastructure. This includes both on-premises and cloud-based systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of networking, virtualization, security, and cloud computing. They will also be able to work independently and as part of a team. A critical objective for this role is to help transition ALA's existing on-prem virtualized infrastructure to a public cloud-based state while simultaneously ensuring the security stability of existing systems and infrastructure processes.
Responsibilities will include:
- Design, implement, document, and support ALA's IT infrastructure
- Manage and monitor all on-premises and cloud-based systems in coordination with relevant vendors and managed service provider resources
- Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure issues and relevant support requests
- Work with vendors and ALA technical team members to ensure that ALA's IT infrastructure is secure and reliable
- Stay up to date on the latest technologies and trends in infrastructure and security management
This is a three-year grant-funded regular full-time position based in our Chicago office - position may be extended if the operational budget permits. Like most ALA staff, the IT Team generally works in a hybrid format. Please note that although we have a generous telecommuting policy for our employees, we do not have any truly remote positions in states outside of our workplace sites.
ALA currently requires that employees be fully vaccinated as defined by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Proof of vaccination will be required on or before start date.
All offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check and proof of your eligibility to work in the United States.
Starting salary range negotiable from the low 100s, based on relevant experience. ALA has an excellent benefit package that includes flexible work schedules, medical, dental, generous paid vacation and a retirement annuity and a 35-hour work week. You may also qualify for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).

Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience with Cloud services like AWS design, EC2, IAM, S3, Azure, or more
- Strong knowledge of and practical experience with VMware, Microsoft Active Directory, Linux, and HP networking equipment
- Practical experience in architecting and maintaining a high-availability production system
- Sufficient development skills in Python or other programming languages
- A clear understanding of SAML, OAuth, OpenID, Kerberos, Linux and security controls for the public Cloud
- 7 years of experience in IT infrastructure administration
Desired Skills:
- Working knowledge of virtualization technologies, such as VMware and Hyper-V
- Working knowledge of cloud computing platforms, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (Google Cloud Platform)
- Working knowledge of networking technologies, such as TCP/IP, routing, and switching
- Working knowledge of security technologies, such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and data encryption
- Working knowledge of operating systems, such as Windows, Linux, and macOS
- Working knowledge of programming languages, such as Python, Java, and C/C
- Experience with security best practices
- Experience with disaster recovery planning
- Experience with change management
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Excellent written, verbal, and team communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to stay up to date on the latest IT technologies and trends

Salary : $100,000 - $120,000
