Job Summary
The Director of Energy Market Analysis leads and develops economic and energy market analysis in support of API’s senior management, policy, communications, and government relations functions, for external consumption by API members, policymakers, and the public. Provide leadership and direction to groups within API by identifying evolving issues and formulating, undertaking, or overseeing appropriate analysis to address identified issues. Provide leadership and expertise to groups within API by providing critical information and analysis to support key policy objectives. This position reports to the Vice President for Economics and Research.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Monitor economic and energy market data to analyze market conditions, contextualize findings and communicate them through data visualization and written work products.
- Manage, train, supervise, and lead Energy Market Analysis team staff.
- Collaborate with Policy, Economics & Regulator Affairs Division staff in the development of near-term and long-term deliverables, including briefs, white papers, presentations, articles, and webinars on relevant economic and energy issues, with the objective to raise internal API as well as public understanding of energy issues, enhance API’s capacity to explain market developments of short- and long-run significance, and inform API’s advocacy.
- Be a recognized subject matter expert in U.S. and international crude oil and natural gas markets, with expertise in analyzing the interaction of energy markets and energy policy.
- Use advanced data visualization and written communications skills to contribute to advocacy efforts at the federal and state levels as well as technical expertise on issues to educate and help support API staff.
- Collect, monitor, and analyze energy market data, relevant to the crude oil and natural gas industry value chain, such as:
- Upstream: investment, drilling, production, productivity by region, and crude oil quality.
- Midstream: gathering, processing, transportation, storage, and import/export facilities.
- Downstream: refining, petrochemical, refinery yields, crack spreads, and their regional differences.
- International trade flows of crude oil, liquified natural gas, natural gas liquids, and refined products.
- Emerging energy technologies: hydrogen, carbon capture, biofuels, and electric vehicles.
- Emissions and relevant indicators such methane and carbon dioxide emissions and measurement methodologies.
- Capital markets and company financial indicators.
- Underlying macroeconomic data and indicators.
- Energy forecasts and projections: EIA, IEA, OPEC, etc.
Qualifications
- 10 years of experience in a similar role and subject matter expertise, including 3 years of relevant management experience.
- Bachelor's degree in relevant area, or other related field equivalent work experience. Master’s degree preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of the oil and natural gas industry, including a detailed understanding of domestic and international energy data, corporate financial reporting, and financial/commodity markets.
- Extensive knowledge of international energy market and economic data sources and methodologies such as Bloomberg, EIA, IEA, OPEC, JODI, Rystad, EUROSTAT, World Bank, IMF, etc.
- Intellectually curious. Collaborative mindset.
- Flexibility, creativity, and an ability to grasp new concepts quickly.
- Initiative and ability to work both independently and collegially with others in the department, across the organization, with member company representatives, and allies are essential.
- Excellent communications (written, verbal, and graphical), planning, organizational skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, PowerBI, STATA for econometric applications, or other data processing/visualization software.

Physical Requirements
- Able to remain in a stationary position working on a computer

- Up to 20% domestic travel.
