Key Responsibilities
Lead mold makers build and repair plastic injection molds for prototype and production applications. Their duties include studying blueprints, plan out jobs, manage their jobs through the different departments, grinding, fitting and final assembly. If any issues occur during the mold test phase the lead mold maker is responsible for trouble shooting and fixing any and all issues with the mold.
Qualifications
Mold makers must be able to inspect products and select the correct shop equipment, precision measuring devices and other tools needed for a job. They also should be able to identify problems during a task and create solutions .Mold makers must have active learning, judgement, time management and organizational skills. These professionals additionally must have strong manual dexterity, wrist-finger speed and arm-hand steadiness .They must be exact and able to read and interpret blueprints as well. Mold makers also should have strong math and communication skills in addition to being able to multitask and work with minimal supervision.
Environment
Mold makers work indoors and frequently use their hands to handle, control or feel objects or tools. They must wear safety glasses and spend a lot of their time standing in one spot .In addition, mold makers often make repetitive motions, twist and turn their bodies to complete tasks, swing large heavy mallets to assemble large molds. Mold makers also work in an environment that is loud and potentially distracting noise levels
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the Team Member is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, squat, use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Move plates and molds weighing up to 15000 lbs by crane. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Education
High school diploma or GED, and 4 to 5 year apprenticeship.
Experience
15 years minimum for Lead mold maker.
Senior lead mold maker with 20 years of experience building complex class A molds .
