Summary/Objective
The position is primarily responsible for building and maintaining software applications delivered via web-based technologies, predominantly the American University web portal (myAU) and the public web site (www.american.edu). The incumbent will be involved in the gathering of functional requirements, prototyping, design, development, deployment and maintenance of enterprise and other web applications. This position will work with a team of ColdFusion, .Net, SharePoint and ServiceNow developers. Moreover, the incumbent keep up with industry trends and provide guidance and recommendations to the team and campus stakeholders.
Essential Functions
- Designs, develops, customizes and integrates web applications within the University’s web content management system (CMS), web portal, and other systems in support of the online needs of the University.
- Maintaining and enhancing existing web applications for additional features, architectural improvements, and operational excellence. Providing technical support to all University web content managers

- The Web Developer will report directly to the Web Development Manager.

Salary Range

Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field, or bachelor's degree in another field and five years of progressive programming experience as an application developer, web developer, or software engineer.
- 5 years experience building or designing solutions, working with cross functional teams, and participating in project development
- 5 years working with web-based technologies
- Practical experience with project lifecycles, source code management, and code reviews
- Experience in a higher education environment preferable
- Experience implementing responsive web and standard web design patterns
- Experience using source control repository (GIT/Subversion)
- Familiarity with accessibility standards compliant with WCAG 2.1 Guidelines
- Experience working with cross-functional teams in an agile development environment
Preferred Education and Experience
- 3 years of ColdFusion programming experience is a plus
- Strong knowledge of databases, MSSQL is a plus
- Experience with SAAS/LESS is a plus
- Experience in web application UI/UX design is a plus
- Experience with CommonSpot, a Content Management System by PaperThin, is a plus; especially if the experience includes development of custom elements.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of web application security concepts
- Solid understanding of Web Services, XML and XSLT, JSON
- Knowledge of current best practices in web design, usability, and accessibility
- Versatile in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript including the use of AJAX, JQUERY, and Prototype libraries
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
- Demonstrated ability to function independently as well as work with a team in a collaborative environment
- Thorough knowledge of and fluency with current web innovations and technologies
- Understanding of web environments in large IT organizations
- Demonstrated knowledge of information architecture principles and user-centered design principles
- Ability to create and maintain articulate, structured technical documentation
