Stewards VISTA: NEEF - Gateway National Recreation Area

The goal of the proposed program is to activate and empower local youth as stewards and 21st century problem solvers. Through implementation of the Greening STEM model, students will participate in citizen science and engage with resource management issues. In addition to the experiential component, this program aims to address inequity in outdoor spaces. Riverside Education Center (REC) is a recognized diversity and inclusion community leader, serving a greater portion of Latinx youth than any other local organization. This project will establish the foundation for a sustainable partnership between Colorado NM and REC and begin the work of closing one of our gaps as a park-meaningful engagement with audiences of color. The target audience for this program is at-risk middle school students (grades 6-8). The student demographics of (REC) are: 45% Latinx, 48% White, 4% multi-racial, 3% other with 72% qualifying for free/reduced lunch. When students participate in REC after school programs, they have a greater opportunity to experience our community among allies with similar lived experience. Riverside Educational Center is an ideal partner to help us address a recognized gap in services for Latinx audiences.¿ The education specialist at Colorado National Monument will work closely with a program coordinator at REC to research, develop and implement¿program plans that align with Next Generation Science Standards, Greening STEM principles, and relevant resource concerns significant to our site’s story. Consultation with local subject matter experts on environmental issues and inventorying and monitoring protocol will inform our implementation plan and encourage additional community involvement in this project.¿¿ Working with REC will extend our reach into more historically underserved communities and support our effort to foster a stronger sense of place on our public lands for more marginalized members of our community.
