Position Summary:
Responsible for the design of and preparation of engineering specifications for a wide range of mechanisms and electro‑mechanical tooling of varying complexities for engineering prototype and production needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct any required preliminary study, refer to available drawings, marked drawings, sketches, verbal instructions, and specifications of similar or related products or parts. Determine proper size, materials, and plan design working with Manufacturing Engineer and production staff to maximize the tool performance, cost, production volume and frequency of use.
- Prepare detailed tool drawings with tolerances and material specifications using SolidWorks. Verify accuracy of detailed drawings including basic engineering and tolerance calculations.
- Modify and adapt existing tool designs for specific purpose applications to achieve lower manufacturing cost.
- Assure that selection of parts and design conform to basic mechanical principles necessary to produce good production tooling. Work within organization to analyze problems with existing fixtures, tools and gages, and recommend changes for improvement.
- Consider standardization and interchangeability of parts during process of design wherever practical. Discuss with supervisor all conditions requiring close study and make recommendations as to improvements.
- Work with vendors/suppliers to resolve questions and problems regarding the manufacture of tools and gages.
- Maintain and develop new tool manufacturing sources and suppliers to meet growing tool demand, costs, turn-around-time, and quality.
- Maintain good records and files. Assign tool numbers in conjunction with process requirements.
- May, as assigned, perform other related duties.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to interpret and understand technical drawings and engineering change orders
- Strong understanding of SolidWorks
- General knowledge of mechanical assembly
- General knowledge of machine shop operations and practices.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Good organizational skills, communication skills, work ethic, ability multi-task and work on a team
Education and Experience:
- Four (4) year technical degree preferred.
- Solidworks experience required.
- Must demonstrate the ability to interpret technical drawings
- Must demonstrate the ability to take mechanical measurements using dial calipers, height gages, micrometers, as well as other mechanical measurements tools.
- Must possess a good working knowledge of casting, machining, and assembly processes.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time
- Prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer.
- Must be able to traverse the production floor safely.
