Position Summary

The Lab Tech (MLT or MLS/MT), under the direction of the Laboratory Administrative Director (LAD) and Laboratory Medical Director (LD), is responsible for all duties as stated in the Position Description.

The Lab Tech performs and assists with routine responsibilities within the General Laboratory as well as the specialty departments of Transfusion Medicine and Microbiology. Additional duties may include, but are not limited to: assisting with and performing technical and scientific duties in both the General and specialty departments of the Laboratory as well as assisting with and coordinating Continuing Education, Competency, and new Lab Employee and student training.

The Lab Tech performs all job duties in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures and follows regulatory standards as stipulated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and assessed by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). Additionally, the Lab Tech is required to follow Hospital policies and procedures, including those within the Employee Handbook. The Lab Tech: will utilize safe laboratory practices, be required to train and oversee new employees, communicate effectively with coworkers, organize the workload, function independently and as a collaborative team member, and maintain current knowledge of laboratory principles, techniques, and equipment. Once training and competency has been completed, the Lab Tech does not require supervision or review of work prior to reporting patient results.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Performs waived, moderate, and high complexity medical laboratory tests.
    • Follows all laboratory policies and procedures in order to perform diagnostic testing for patients and proficiency specimens.
    • Performs diagnostic testing in all general laboratory departments, including: Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, and Serology.
    • Performs complex diagnostic testing in the specialty laboratory departments, including: Transfusion Medicine and Microbiology.
    • Demonstrates and maintains proficiency with automated analyzers, manual testing techniques, and a wide-variety of laboratory equipment.
    • Demonstrates and applies a working knowledge of reagent and product handling, including stability, preparation, and storage, to ensure quality of laboratory testing.
    • Maintains legible, organized, accurate, and complete laboratory records.
    • Reviews test results for accuracy, critical values, extraordinary results, and clerical errors prior to reporting to the patient's medical record.
    • Enters patient results into Meditech/LIS either by analyzer interface or manual entry.
    • Makes decisions regarding laboratory testing, identifies and corrects problems that may adversely affect test performance, and investigates questionable test performance or unusual results prior to issuing report to patient's medical records.


  • Coordinates workload, departmental activities, and instrument troubleshooting, using calm and reasonable judgment, with minimal or no supervision.
  • Follows defined protocols and uses good judgment for investigating out of control QC and Calibration results, including documenting remedial actions and notifications.
  • Follows established corrective action policies whenever systems are not within acceptable level of performance, including documenting remedial actions and notifications.
  • Reviews test results for abnormal findings and potential instrument malfunctions, and performs general troubleshooting regarding instrumentation and specimen quality to investigate questionable results.
  • Performs a wide-variety of specimen collections and specimen processing
  • Properly identifies both patients and specimens, per policy, to ensure accuracy.
  • Performs all phlebotomies: venous, arterial, finger, and heel puncture.
  • Collects and/or provides sufficient collection instructions: throat swabs, urine, stool, and other specimens.
  • Collects urine and blood specimens, using proper chain-of custody procedures, for Law Enforcement and NSH employee drug screens.
  • Demonstrates the ability to relate to all types of patients, including all ages (newborns to the elderly), and patients with a wide variety of physical and/or psychological conditions.
  • Processes laboratory specimens, following applicable processing and safety policies.
  • Evaluates the quality of specimens to ensure specimen integrity and acceptability.
  • Properly prepares and transports specimens according to current policy and regulations.
  • Maintains laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Performs and documents all cleaning and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
  • Performs, analyzes, and documents the results of QC and calibrations.
  • Performs general troubleshooting and consults others as needed.
  • Demonstrates and utilizes laboratory workplace safety
    • Follows all OSHA, facility-wide, and laboratory-specific safety policies and procedures.
    • Demonstrates and follows all safety requirements for laboratory equipment.
    • Maintains good infection control and uses all PPE as instructed and as applicable.
    • Demonstrates and applies a working knowledge of reagent/product safety, including a variety of chemicals such as acids, bases, volatiles, irritants, and carcinogens.
    • Performs a variety of miscellaneous laboratory duties and responsibilities
    • Evaluates laboratory orders for acceptability, monitors outpatient Medicare orders for proper diagnosis, and enters, edits, and cancels order into Meditech/LIS.
    • Performs general cleaning, waste management, temperature and humidity monitoring, records inventory, monitors expiration dates, orders and stocks supplies, etc.
    • Participates in facility committees, QA/CQI, etc.
    • Trains and oversees new employees, as directed by the Laboratory Administrative Director.
    • Serves as a consultant and provide assistance to coworkers, other departments, and physicians concerning laboratory matters; is aware of limits of advisement as well.
    • Assists with research, development, revision, implement, and review of new and existing procedures; helps ensure procedures reflect current practice and also comply with current CLSI and CAP standards.
    • Takes an active role in the Laboratory Accreditation process, including preparation for inspections and participation in evaluations by inspectors.
    • Assists with and performs technical and scientific duties and responsibilities
    • General Laboratory: assists in oversight of the General Laboratory departments, including updates, changes, training, competency, and other duties.
    • Specialty Departments: may assist with updates, changes, training, and other duties in the Transfusion Medicine and Microbiology departments.
    • Laboratory Informatics: may assist with Meditech/LIS Dictionary duties.
    • Additional duties may include, but are not limited to: assisting with and performing other technical and scientific duties in the Laboratory; coordinating Continuing Education and Competency; and organizing new Lab Tech and student training.
    • Serves as a mentor and role model in all departments of the laboratory.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Additional Laboratory-specific Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

    • Ability to write using intelligent, professional content, utilizing proper English grammar and punctuation.
    • Ability to speak and hear clearly in order to communicate with patients, coworkers, and others.
    • Understands and performs mathematical calculations necessary for laboratory work, including specimen and/or reagent dilutions and concentrations and converting units of measurement.
    • Demonstrates the ability to perform multiple tasks in several different departments, with a high degree of accuracy. Is able to multi task and prioritize work, despite excessive noise, frequent interruptions, and enduring a high level of stress from working under pressure, alone, or in an unpleasant situation.
    • Ability to see well enough to operate all laboratory equipment effectively, perceive similarities and differences in colors, read test reactions, interpret and record results, perform all types of phlebotomies, and many other physically small and/or detailed laboratory duties.
    • Ability to hear well enough in order effectively communicate in a standard manner will all patients, coworkers, etc., and to also be able to differentiate different sounds and alarms on laboratory analyzers and equipment.
    • Performs computer functions necessary for laboratory work, including using Meditech/LIS, manipulating data in spreadsheets, word processing, communicating by email, and conducting internet research.
    • Possesses a general understanding of the scientific principles of laboratory testing, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, microbiology and antibiotics, and a broad range of disease processes and their relation to laboratory testing.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of laws, regulations, and standards relating to laboratory accrediting agencies.
