HELLO Future AFGA Instructor! Below is an overview of the steps necessary to become an AFGA Adaptive Swimming Instructor. Read on, trust me - the work will change you!
· PASS the heart test - the WHY behind your interest in becoming an AFGA instructor. We work only with special needs swimmers of all ages.
· DEMONSTRATE that you are a swimmer. You must know how to swim to teach others to swim. Over the course of your first YEAR with AFGA, you must also pass the Red Cross WSI (water safety instructor) course AND the Red Cross Life Gaurd training provided by Gwinnett County. The cost for this certification is paid by AFGA.
· INTERN in-water with a senior instructor. We have several senior instructors, several of which teach year round.
· COMPLETE the Swim Angelfish (R) Adaptive Methodology Course. AFGA pays for this certification. The program is incredible and is done all on line. It takes 30 hours or so to complete with tests throughout and a final at the end.
· JOIN IN THE FUN as you begin your journey teaching our incredible angelfish. You will be teaching next to another instructor for the first season of your time with AFGA. Then the fun begins. AFGA has an active wait list and fills rosters to a 98% capacity year round. We are also creating new classes and programs all the time.
As potential instructors for AFGA there are a few fabulous outcomes of being invoved and teaching.
· Your schedule is YOURS. You control your availability and tell me what you would like to do. Remember though, our swimmers need consistency and need to see the same instructor. Senior instructors can sub in here and there. We teach more in the "summer" than the fall/winter/spring, but the demand is HUGE.
· You are invited to work simultaneously with Gwinnett County Aquatics as a lifegaurd or WSI instructor IF you would like to work more. Summertime (June and July) AFGA instructors must join the Gwinnett County team to help support our partner in the staffing of their pools BUT teaching our angelfish comes first.
· Invitation to attend the annual Swim Angelfish (R) Founder In-Service offered by either Ailene Tisser or Cindy Freedman. This usually happens in July in conjunction with their visit here to GA when they also facilitate the Totally Treatment Pediatric Course for OTs and PTs interested in adding aquatic therapy to their clinics. They also attend our Annual Adaptive Family Swim Party at West Gwinnett Park Aquatic Center. Last summer, we hosted over 350 folks - families and friends of differently abled swimmers. I hope to see them again in 2022.
· You are paid weekly, and you are responsible for your own taxes and reporting of same. I can talk you through all this too. The pay is GREAT! I call it "full time pay for part time work". What we do matters, so I pay accordingly.
· You get to work with the most amazing swimmers and their families! We become a part of their tribes, working to support the kids who swim with us in any way possible
